Vol. I · No. 22Monday, 7 September 2026US Open · fourth round
Six of the fourth round, ranked by disagreement. Naomi Osaka has an Achilles problem she has carried since June and took a medical timeout on Friday; Elena Rybakina has a heel tendon and has not dropped a set in three rounds. Career figures come from a new source today, for a reason set out below. Five corrections are carried, the first to the generator that builds this site — two archive pages have been showing the wrong text since Saturday.
Conditions
US OpenFlushing Meadows, New York
Sunny, high 82°F (28°C), north wind around 9 mph, no precipitation in the forecast. Mostly clear tonight, low 66°F (19°C), north-west wind 3–5 mph.
Labor Day, and the warmest and cleanest day of the fortnight — eight degrees up on yesterday with a light breeze and no rain risk at any point. Two of these six are night matches and both start after eight, in air that will still be in the low seventies. Nothing here will decide a match; the heat is a factor only for the two men who have already played five sets twice.
Where the tournament stands
The men's quarterfinal line-up is half full and three of the four are American. Carlos Alcaraz beat Tommy Paul 6-4 6-3 6-4; Frances Tiafoe beat Daniil Medvedev 7-6(1) 6-4 7-6(6) for his first win over him on an outdoor hard court in seven attempts; Ben Shelton beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 6-3 6-4; and Alex Michelsen, unseeded, beat Tomás Martín Etcheverry 7-6(6) 6-4 6-4 without dropping a set for the fourth match running. On the women's side Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro both came through, Navarro beating Anna Kalinskaya in a match the market had priced as a dead heat. Aryna Sabalenka beat Taylor Townsend 6-4 6-3 and Linda Noská beat Marta Kostyuk 7-5 5-7 6-4.

Frances Tiafoe beat Daniil Medvedev 7-6(1) 6-4 7-6(6) — his first win over him on an outdoor hard court in seven attempts, twenty-nine days after surgery on his racquet hand. Yesterday's card had it as four points of edge on the underdog and said the model could not see the hand, the hip or eleven matches in twenty-nine days, and that Medvedev had arrived on three straight defeats. The second blind spot was the one that mattered.
Emma Navarro beat Anna Kalinskaya in the card the page led on. The market called it a dead pick'em and the model made Kalinskaya a 65% favourite; the market was closer. Alex Michelsen has still not dropped a set, beating Etcheverry 7-6(6) 6-4 6-4, and Ben Shelton beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 6-3 6-4 in three quiet sets after his 2 AM finish on Friday.
Sixteen days. Selected matches played to a finish have gone to the favourite 79 times in 131.

Nothing new is flagged today. Coco Gauff won the Cincinnati title on 23 August — six matches, the deepest run the flag has had a chance at — and she is on card 04. That is fifteen days ago and the window is about ten, so it does not fire. Same call as yesterday.
Corrections
Five. Four are to editions published in the last three days; the first is to the generator that builds this site.
Two archive pages have been showing the wrong text for two days, because of a bug in this site's generator. Editions are built from constants named after the day of the month — RECAP_20, GAPS_21 and so on. On 5 September, editions No. 20 and No. 21 were written using those same two names, which silently overwrote the constants belonging to 20 and 21 August. Python does not warn when a module-level name is rebound, so nothing failed and nothing looked wrong. The result: edition No. 5 (20 August) and edition No. 6 (21 August) have been rendering September's recap, sourcing notes and selection notes since Saturday. Their match cards, probabilities and scorecards were never affected — those come from separate files. Both are corrected in this build, and the generator now refuses to build at all if any two edition constants share a name.
Khachanov's losing streak was four, not five. The 5 September edition said Karen Khachanov arrived in New York on “five straight losses”. He won two matches at Wimbledon after the Halle defeat, so the run into the tournament was four: Wimbledon third round, Los Cabos, Montreal, Cincinnati. The ATP's own figure of 16-18 entering the US Open, against 19-18 now, confirms the arithmetic.
Khachanov is ranked 50, not 46. The same edition gave his ranking as “46–50, disputed”. It is 50 — his lowest since June 2017 — stated by the ATP in two separate reports this week. No source for 46 could be found.
Zverev is the top seed because Sinner withdrew. Two editions printed his seeding as an unexplained discrepancy: seeded 1, ranked 2. The explanation is that Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament with a knee problem, promoting Zverev to top seed. Both figures were always correct; the brief simply had not found the reason.
Arthur Géa's career surface record can be published after all. The 5 September edition withheld his surface rows because TennisExplorer printed career hard 17-43 against clay 61-5 for a man 22-3 on hard this season. Re-read today, the same page prints hard 60-17, clay 66-61 — the sensible orientation — and reconciles exactly at both career and per-year level. A second source agrees on the shape. The withholding was right on the evidence available; the figures are on card 03 today.
A note on today's career figures
The career surface splits on this page come from a different source than every previous edition, and the change is not cosmetic. TennisExplorer, which this brief has used since the beginning precisely so the numbers stay comparable, is currently serving snapshots between three and twenty months stale for all twelve of today's players — Osaka and Jović to January 2025, Gauff to February 2025, Rybakina to May 2025, Blockx to November 2025, Cerúndolo to December 2025. It also has Khachanov's grass and indoor columns transposed, giving him 127 career grass wins, while still summing correctly — so an arithmetic check alone passes it. Today's figures are therefore taken from matchstat for all twelve, which keeps them comparable with each other but not with the archive.
That source has its own defect and it is disclosed rather than smoothed over: for three of today's four women the surface rows do not sum to the stated career total — Gauff by twelve wins and five losses, Osaka by three wins, Rybakina by one. Gauff's gap is far too large to be rounding. Her overall figure and her surface rows should not be derived from one another, and neither should the other two.

Blockx 7-6(8), 6-2 — 2026 Madrid R16 Clay
One meeting, four months ago, on clay — and Blockx won it in a Masters 1000 fourth round on Cerúndolo's own surface. A first-set tiebreak that went to 8-6 and then a bagel-adjacent second. One head-to-head tool renders the row ambiguously enough to attribute the win to Cerúndolo; two others state in prose that Blockx won, and the record as 0-1. No qualifying-level meetings exist.

The widest disagreement on the page, and both men arrive off a top-ten scalp. Cerúndolo came from two sets down to beat the ninth seed Taylor Fritz 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4; Blockx beat the fifth seed Flavio Cobolli 6-7(4) 6-3 6-0 6-3 with 17 aces, three weeks after losing to the same man at Cincinnati. Cerúndolo has played thirteen sets in three rounds — a five-setter against Struff as well as the Fritz comeback — against Blockx's eleven. Note the surface records: Blockx is a career indoor player (69-29) whose outdoor-hard record, 43-32, is his weakest of the three main surfaces, and Elo rates him 26th overall but only 39th on hard. Cerúndolo's clay-heavy split is genuine, corroborated across two sources.
Health & notes
Cerúndolo: no injury concerns found. He won Queen's Club on 21 June — his biggest career title and the first by an Argentine at the event — beating Nakashima and Tommy Paul on grass, which sits oddly with a career grass record of 14-12.
Blockx: no injury concerns found. He withdrew from the French Open in May with an ankle problem and has played continuously since with no recurrence. This is his first Grand Slam fourth round, at 21, and his second career top-ten win. He also reached his first ATP final at Estoril in July.
One free round: Blockx's Montreal second round last month was a walkover in his favour when Munar withdrew — a round banked without playing.
AssessmentSixteen and a half points of disagreement, and the market and the model are reading the same fact in opposite directions. Elo has Cerúndolo 25th on hard and Blockx 39th, and flips the match to Cerúndolo at 57.6%. The market has watched Blockx beat the fifth seed and Cerúndolo need five sets twice, and made the younger man a 59% favourite anyway.

Both women are carrying a lower-leg tendon injury, and only one of them has been tested on it. Rybakina's left heel is the story the brief has followed for a week; Osaka's Achilles is new information and it is worse. Osaka has taken a medical timeout inside the last three days and gone three sets in each of her last two matches; Rybakina has won all three rounds in straight sets, the first in 74 minutes. Career hard-court rates: Osaka 67.2%, Rybakina 70.6%. Neither player's career rows sum to her own stated total at the source used today — Osaka is three wins short, Rybakina one — so treat the overall figures as approximate.
Health & notes
⚠Osaka — Achilles, and it is ten weeks old: she took a medical timeout at 3-4 down in the third set on 5 September, treated with massage and Tylenol, then won three straight games to beat Mertens 7-5. Her own account ties it to everything else: “this ongoing problem that I've had since the grass season”, “the same thing I've been dealing with since Bad Homburg”, “I don't know why it hasn't gone away”. The June foot retirement and the August fatigue withdrawal are the same injury.
⚠Rybakina — left heel tendon, untested: retired from the Cincinnati quarterfinal on 20 August; on 1 September a report specified a tendon in the left heel, felt most when landing on the serve. No medical timeout in any of her three matches here and no visible trouble. Andy Roddick's position on 7 September is not a retraction but a refinement: her first three opponents did not test it, and “I don't know that we've seen it to the level that Osaka will make her move.”
Court time is the cleanest signal: Rybakina has spent six sets reaching the fourth round; Osaka has spent eight, including two three-setters back to back and a trainer visit in the most recent.
AssessmentElo makes Rybakina a 72.6% favourite where the market has her at 56.9% — the second-widest gap on the page, and one of the few this brief has printed where the disagreement points the same way as the news. The model is not reading either injury. It just rates a live world No. 1 far above a 13th seed, and the fitness evidence available this morning happens to agree with it.

A lucky loser against the man who has beaten Medvedev, Hurkacz and de Minaur in the last five weeks. Géa lost the final round of qualifying on 28 August and got in when Casper Ruud withdrew; he has since played two five-setters and won a hard-court ATP title (Los Cabos, 2 August) that his own ranking has not caught up with — official 87, live 63. His career hard record of 74-19 against 68-62 on clay is the figure this brief withheld on Friday and can now publish; see the corrections. Van de Zandschulp has played twelve matches in thirty-five days across four consecutive hard-court events with no week off, ending with a four-and-a-half-hour five-setter against Bergs on Saturday.
Health & notes
Géa: no injury concerns found, and he is on record about the schedule — “physically fit and ready to fight”, and “I'm used to playing tournaments back-to-back”. He was a US Open boys' semifinalist in 2023, losing to Learner Tien, who plays on card 05.
⚠van de Zandschulp — workload:twelve matches in thirty-five days, four events without a break, and 4h30 on court on Saturday. Asked afterwards how he would recover he spoke only about the mental side and did not mention his body at all. No fitness concern is reported — the load is a fact, the fatigue is an inference, and the brief is not making it.
The 23-day gap: Géa played nothing between the Los Cabos final on 2 August and US Open qualifying on 25 August. A Challenger-inclusive source confirms the gap is real rather than a hole in the data. No source explains it, and there is no injury report — it stays a gap rather than becoming a theory.
One form string to distrust: a widely-syndicated preview prints Géa's recent form as ten straight wins. It is not — it has silently deleted his 28 August qualifying loss. The real sequence is seven wins, a loss, then three.
AssessmentElo flips it, giving Géa 52.3% against a market that has him at 41.3%, on the strength of a hard-court rating forty-two places above his overall. That is the same argument that won for him against Svajda on 3 September and again against Zheng on Saturday. The counter is on the other side of the net: van de Zandschulp beat him nobody in this draw would have beaten a month ago.

Gauff won Cincinnati fifteen days ago and has not lost a set at this tournament — nine consecutive wins across the two events. Jović, at 18, has come through a 44-winner three-setter against Alexandra Eala that she described as “a marathon… I felt like I lost my sanity five times over”. The career rows are the least reliable on the page: Gauff's surface rows fall twelve wins and five losses short of her own stated total at the source used today, which is too large to be rounding, so her overall and her splits should not be derived from each other.
Health & notes
Gauff: no injury or fitness item found in the current window — an absence of evidence rather than a clearance. The coverage around her at this tournament is about a rebuilt serve, not her body.
Jović — the ankle, June, no recurrence: she injured her left ankle at Queen's around 13 June, which forced her out of the Queen's doubles and then out of Nottingham entirely. Nothing since: Wimbledon fourth round three weeks later, then Toronto, Cincinnati and three rounds here, with no medical timeout and no withdrawal.
Gauff is not deep-run flagged, and it is close: she won the Cincinnati title on 23 August — six matches, the deepest run the flag has had a chance at. Fifteen days ago; the window is about ten. Not flagged.
AssessmentNine points of edge on the favourite rather than the underdog — Elo makes Gauff 80.9% where the market says 71.8%. The model is reading a No. 2-rated player against a 23rd; the market is reading an 18-year-old who took a set off her in May and has beaten Fręch, Jones and Eala without much trouble.

Khachanov is unseeded at a Slam for the first time since 2018 and ranked 50th, his lowest since June 2017 — and he has beaten the third seed to get here. Tien had the lighter draw by far: three straight-sets wins costing nine sets, then a 3h24 five-setter against Menšík finishing near 1:30 AM on Saturday. Elo rates Tien 12th on hard against Khachanov's 55th, a 149-point gap, and the market agrees with the direction while pricing it more cautiously. Tien's career hard record of 125-44 is the best rate on this page.
Health & notes
Khachanov: no injury concerns found. “Emotionally, I was a little bit down before coming to New York”, he said this week, and “hopefully, physically I could be fit” — a forward-looking hope rather than a reported problem.
⚠And his second round deserves an asterisk:Félix Auger-Aliassime said he was “dizzy and seeing spots” from a set and a half in, and that he had never felt quite like it. He won the first set 7-6(5) and lost 6-3 6-2 6-2. The other two wins — 6-3 6-0 6-1 over Burruchaga and 6-3 6-2 6-4 over Bonzi — carry no such qualification.
Tien: no injury concerns found. The Menšík match ran 3h24 and finished around 1:30 AM Saturday; he had all of Sunday off, which is the normal pattern. He also reached the Montreal semifinal last month, a heavy summer for a 20-year-old.
AssessmentSeven points on Tien at −189, which is the model and the market disagreeing about degree rather than direction. Both make the 20-year-old the favourite; Elo just makes him a much bigger one, on a hard-court rating 149 points clear.

Darderi 1-6, 7-6(10), 6-0 — saved four match points — 2026 Rome R16 Clay
Zverev 7-6(3), 6-2 — 2024 Rome R32 Clay
Both meetings are in Rome, both on clay, exactly two years apart to the day. The 2026 match is the one that matters: Darderi saved four match points in the second-set tiebreak — at 5/6, 7/8, 8/9 and 9/10 — and then won the decider 6-0 against the then world No. 3. One encyclopedia calls that a quarterfinal; it was the round of 16, and the ATP's own report settles it.

Zverev has played five sets twice and it cost him nine and a half hours — 4h53 against Sonego, 4h33 against Halys finishing at 2:15 AM — before a 2h26 straight-sets reprieve against Tabilo on Saturday. He won Roland Garros in June and lost the Wimbledon final to Sinner in July. Darderi's career outdoor-hard record is 41-38, against 204-109 on clay, and Elo rates him 41st overall but 82nd on hard — the largest negative surface gap on the page. Twelve days ago, as second seed at Winston-Salem, he lost 1-6 0-6 in 68 minutes to Botic van de Zandschulp.
Health & notes
Zverev: no injury reported. He withdrew from Hamburg in May with a back problem he said had troubled him all clay season — then won Roland Garros three weeks later, and the back has not been mentioned since. His only fatigue-adjacent remark this fortnight was framed as vindication: “That's what I go to the gym for, that's what I go to the track for.”
Darderi:retired at Los Cabos on 30 July after three games with a right-arm problem, no diagnosis released. He returned four days later and made the Montreal quarterfinals; nine matches since with no recurrence, so it reads as resolved. No current injury reported.
Zverev's seeding, explained at last: he is seeded 1 and ranked 2 because Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament with a knee problem. Two previous editions printed the discrepancy as unexplained. See the corrections.
AssessmentLess than two points of disagreement at a price of ten-to-one on — the model and the market agree almost exactly, which is why this is carded last. The reason to watch it is not the number: Darderi has already beaten this opponent from four match points down, and Zverev has spent more time on court in this tournament than anyone left in the draw.
Also on the schedule
These six are the matches commissioned for today. Sixteen fourth-round singles matches are being played; six are covered here and the rest of the schedule is not. Three of the six had already started when this went out, which is marked on each card.
