Vol. I · No. 19Friday, 4 September 2026US Open · third round

Seven of the third round, including the closest price this brief has carried in nineteen editions — an all-Argentine coin toss at 50.6 against 49.4. Today the research budget went to head-to-head instead of career records, and for the first time every pair on the page has one.

Conditions

US OpenFlushing Meadows, New York
Mostly sunny, high near 80°F (27°C), light north-west wind becoming southerly 5–10 mph in the afternoon. Clear tonight, low 63°F (17°C). No precipitation in the forecast today or tonight.
A second clean day after Tuesday's washout, and the draw is fully back on schedule — the last of the delayed first rounds cleared on Wednesday. Nothing here should interrupt play. The one detail worth a line is the evening: it drops to the low sixties after dark, and four of these seven are night matches, where a cooler, heavier ball rewards the bigger hitter rather less than the afternoon does.

Where the tournament stands

The third seed is out. Karen Khachanov beat Félix Auger-Aliassime 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2 6-2 for his first win over him in seven years, and this brief had it at 72/28 the other way. Arthur Géa, a lucky loser, beat Zachary Svajda 5-7 6-3 6-2 6-2 — the card this page led on, and it came off on the model's side. Francisco Cerúndolo outlasted Jan-Lennard Struff 5-7 7-5 4-6 6-2 6-3 in just over four hours, and Alejandro Tabilo took 3h22 to beat Alexei Popyrin from a set down. Ignacio Buse's tournament ended: nine days after winning Winston-Salem and one day after a 3h48 five-setter, he lost to Benjamin Bonzi 6-2 7-6(4) 6-0, with Peruvian coverage attributing the third set directly to fatigue. Also through: Darderi, Michael Zheng, Bartunková, Qinwen Zheng and Blockx. Today is the third round, and this page picks out seven of it.

Yesterday's brief, scored

Ten cards, ten results, the favourite won seven — and the model had its best day of the run.

The card this page led on came off, and it came off on the argument the page said not to trust. Svajda v Géa led yesterday because the market called it a coin toss and Elo gave Géa 63.4% — a sixteen-point gap resting entirely on a hard-court rating 42 places above his overall. The card warned that this was the same shape as Talia Gibson's on 30 August, where the brief leaned on exactly that number and was emphatically wrong. Géa won 5-7 6-3 6-2 6-2. Two instances of a pattern, one each way, is not evidence of anything — but it is the second time the surface-gap number has been the most interesting thing on a page, and today it is the most interesting thing on card 06.

The deep-run flag has a postscript that the scoring rules will not let it claim. Buse was flagged coming off the Winston-Salem title; that flag resolved as a miss on 2 September when he won a 3h48 five-setter. Yesterday he lost to Bonzi 6-2 7-6(4) 6-0, and Peruvian outlets attributed the third-set collapse directly to fatigue from that five-setter. The cost the flag was looking for arrived — one round later than the flag measures. The rule is not being changed to capture it. Widening the window after seeing a result that would benefit from a wider window is how an experiment stops being one. It is recorded here as an observation, and the flag stays scored as a miss.

The third seed is out. Karen Khachanov beat Félix Auger-Aliassime 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2 6-2 — his first win over him in seven years — and this page had it at 72/28 the wrong way. Francisco Cerúndolo beat Jan-Lennard Struff 5-7 7-5 4-6 6-2 6-3 in just over four hours, and Alejandro Tabilo needed 3h22 to get past Alexei Popyrin from a set down.

Fourteen days. Selected matches played to a finish have gone to the favourite 65 times in 111.

Six of ten is the best single day of the run and it lifts the total to 44%, up from the 40% low on Wednesday. The four it lost are worth naming as a set: Bonzi, Q. Zheng, Auger-Aliassime and Blockx — and in three of those four the model was the bolder line and the boldness went the wrong way. On Thursday the same boldness won it five. That is what a 44% record looks like from the inside.

The ratings are four days old and have still seen no match of this tournament. Both files remain stamped 31 August. Every model line on this page is calculated from a world in which the US Open has not started — including card 06, where it rates Denis Shapovalov 37th on hard against a ranking of 48th, and card 03, where it rates Daniel Mérida Aguilar above Alex Michelsen on the strength of a season that does not yet include his win over Rublev.

An all-Argentine third round between two players raised on clay, and the second rounds were nearly identical in shape. Etcheverry beat Jacob Fearnley 6-3 6-3 3-6 6-3; Navone beat Matteo Berrettini 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-6(4) — four sets each, one set dropped each, a day apart. Navone is reported to have grown up playing almost exclusively on clay and not to have competed regularly on hard courts until 2021 or 2022, which makes this run the more surprising of the two. No career surface splits were researched today — see the footer.

Health & notes

Etcheverry: no injury scan was run today. Seeded 29. One source credited his opponent with beating Djokovic at this tournament; that is almost certainly a confusion with Valentin Vacherot's 2025 Shanghai win over Djokovic — a different player at a different event — and it is not repeated here as fact.
Navone: no injury scan was run today. Ranked just outside the top forty, unseeded, and he has just taken out Berrettini in four.
AssessmentA coin toss in the truest sense: 50.6 against 49.4, and the model agrees to within half a point at 51.1. Two Argentines who have met twice, both times on clay, years ago, on a surface neither grew up on. There is no edge to find here and the brief is not going to manufacture one — it leads the page because it is the closest thing to even that nineteen editions have produced.

Neither second-round result could be established before publication, which leaves both workload columns empty on a card where the head-to-head is unusually informative. Lehečka is seeded 18 and rated 18th on hard court; Tsitsipas is unseeded and rated 29th, with a career that has been a long way higher than that. The market's 62/38 and the model's 59/41 are close enough to be the same view.

Health & notes

Lehečka: no injury scan was run today. Seeded 18, and his overall and hard-court ratings sit within one place of each other — a player with no strong surface preference.
Tsitsipas: no injury scan was run today. Unseeded at a Grand Slam is the fact that needs no elaboration for a former world No. 3 and two-time major finalist; the model still rates him 29th on this surface.
AssessmentThe head-to-head is the whole card and it is genuinely split — two each, all on hard, with the two most recent going to the Czech in straight sets in 2024. Since then Lehečka has become a seed and Tsitsipas has stopped being one. Both lines price that the same way, at around three-to-two.

The widest disagreement on the page, and the head-to-head is on the model's side. The market makes Michelsen a 63% favourite; Elo has it nearly level at 53.1%, because it rates Mérida Aguilar 27th overall against Michelsen's 31st. Both are 21 and both won in straight or near-straight sets in round two — Michelsen over Brandon Nakashima 6-3 6-4 6-4, Mérida Aguilar over Andrey Rublev 6-7(3) 6-2 6-4 6-4. Beating Rublev is comfortably the better win, and the market has not priced it.

Health & notes

Michelsen: no injury scan was run today. American, 21, unseeded, and his hard-court rating of 24th sits above his overall 31st.
Mérida Aguilar: no injury scan was run today. Spanish, 21, unseeded, and he has beaten Rublev and — four weeks ago in Montreal — the man across the net today.
AssessmentTwo 21-year-olds who have split two matches this season, both on hard, with the more recent going to the underdog. Add a second-round win over Rublev and a rating four places above his opponent's, and a 63/37 price starts to look like the market pricing a nationality and a name. The model has it at 53/47 and the evidence is on the model's side.

Tiafoe's last month is the most crowded on this page and he has won every match of it he has finished. The sequence: a retirement at Montreal on 6 August, a cyst removed from his right hand a day or two later, a Cincinnati final on 23 August with a hip medical timeout during it, a five-set first round here finishing near one in the morning, then a straight-sets second round over Rei Sakamoto. This is his seventh consecutive US Open third round, the longest active streak in men's tennis. Vacherot came through Kamil Majchrzak 6-4 4-6 7-6 6-2 on Wednesday, saving the third-set tiebreak from 3-2 down.

Health & notes

⚠Tiafoe — a month with a retirement, an operation, a Masters final and a five-setter in it. Every element of that is sourced and dated, and he has come through all of it. This brief flagged him for a deep run on 31 August and he won in five; the flag is recorded as a miss. His current condition could not be re-established today — the dedicated injury source returned a 403 — so this note is a summary of a known timeline, not new information.
Vacherot: no injury scan was run today, but his 2026 is documented: a strong Monte Carlo, then a left-foot injury that forced him out before his second round at Roland Garros and out of Wimbledon entirely. He arrived here on a four-match losing streak and is now in the third round. In 2025 he won the Shanghai Masters as a qualifier ranked 204th, beating Djokovic in the semifinal and his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the final.
AssessmentA first meeting between the eleventh seed and a man who won a Masters 1000 from nowhere last autumn and then lost most of this season to a foot. The two lines agree to within a point — 37.1% and 36.4% — which is what happens when neither has any head-to-head to work with. Under a roof, at night, both are fresh enough; the interesting question is whether the month behind Tiafoe finally arrives.

The most one-sided head-to-head on the page, and the market has priced it at less than three-to-one. Neither second-round result could be established, so both workload columns are empty. What is solid: Svitolina is the ninth seed and rated sixth in the world on hard court, the highest rating in this edition; Kalinskaya is the 21st seed and rated 20th. On the ratings alone this should be closer than the head-to-head suggests, which is roughly where both lines land.

Health & notes

Svitolina: no injury scan was run today. Seeded 9, rated 6th on hard, and she has beaten this opponent every time they have played on any surface.
Kalinskaya: no injury scan was run today. Seeded 21 and rated 20th on hard — a seed-appropriate rating, against an opponent she has not yet beaten.
AssessmentFive meetings, five defeats, including a 6-1 6-1 and a retirement — and a price of only 70/30. Both lines sit close together, the model marginally cooler at 67.7%. Either the market is discounting a head-to-head built partly on Kalinskaya's bad days, or it is right that a 21st seed against a 9th seed should not be four-to-one whatever the history says.

A four-to-one price against a man who is 4-0 in the head-to-head. That is the sharpest contradiction the brief has carried. Shapovalov is ranked 48th against a career high of 10th, and his hard-court rating of 37th sits thirty places above his overall 67th — the second-largest positive surface gap this page has printed, after Arthur Géa's, and Géa won yesterday on exactly that argument. His route here: Kecmanović in four, then Luca Van Assche 6-0 6-4 7-6. Shelton's second-round result could not be established.

Health & notes

Shelton: no injury scan was run today. Seeded 8, ranked 9, rated 6th in the world on hard court — the strongest rating on this page. He was a US Open semifinalist in 2023.
Shapovalov: no injury scan was run today. His 2026 hard-court record is 10-8 and it is his best surface; he lost to Rafael Jodar in Cincinnati shortly before this tournament. The ranking of 48 sits a long way below both his peak and, apparently, his level.
AssessmentFour-to-one on a player who has lost all four previous meetings, three on hard, the last of them this February when his opponent was ranked outside the top hundred and he was the second seed. Elo is barely cooler at 73.3%. This is the card where the market and the head-to-head disagree most violently, and the surface-rating gap — the one that worked yesterday for Géa — is on the underdog's side again.

The season records are the price. Muchová is 35-9 for the year against Navarro's 22-17, and 68-29 in sets against 53-45. She is ranked 7th and seeded 7th; Navarro is ranked 27th and seeded 26th. No health explanation for the gap was found — the disparity is form and ranking, not condition, and it is worth saying so, because a four-to-one price on a seed usually implies something is wrong. Neither second-round result could be established before publication.

Health & notes

Navarro: no injury scan was run today, and nothing surfaced in the reporting to explain the price. She reached the semifinals here in 2024 and came through a rain-split three-setter over Loïs Boisson in the first round.
Muchová: no injury scan was run today. Seeded 7, rated 12th on hard court, and 35-9 for the season — the best record of anyone in this edition.
AssessmentA first meeting, a four-to-one price, and no head-to-head to argue with it. The model is the more generous of the two, giving Navarro 28.4% against the market's 22.2% — a six-point gap, and the only one on the page where the model likes the underdog materially more. Muchová's 35-9 season is the number doing the work, and the ratings have not seen a match of this tournament to update it either way.
Also on the schedule
These seven are a selection, not the day's card. The third round is under way across both draws and around thirty singles matches are being played; seven are covered here because they looked the most interesting — the closest price in nineteen editions, a 4-0 head-to-head running against a four-to-one favourite, and two players who beat Rublev and Berrettini to get here. The rest of the schedule is not covered.
