The Daily Lob

Vol. I · No. 16Tuesday, 1 September 2026US Open · first round

Nine first-round matches on day three, under an 80% chance of severe thunderstorms with only one of the nine under a roof. Both ratings files finally share a date, three of today’s prices had to be un-swapped before they could be used, and the deep-run experiment reports its first results.

Conditions

US OpenFlushing Meadows, New York
An 80% chance of rain today. Showers before 2 PM, showers and thunderstorms between 2 PM and 5 PM, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 PM. High 84°F (29°C), south wind around 6 mph. A quarter to half an inch of rain expected, and the National Weather Service says some of the storms could be severe. Tonight: thunderstorms before 11 PM, 80% again, low 70°F (21°C).
This is the most disruptive forecast the brief has carried, and it lands on a nine-card day where only one match is protected. Ashe and Armstrong have roofs; every other court at Flushing is open. Of the nine matches below, only Zverev v Sonego is under a roof. The other eight — on Stadium 17, Court 7, Court 12, Court 13 and the Grandstand — are exposed to a storm window that opens at two o'clock and does not close. Expect suspensions, expect the order of play to move, and treat every start time on this page as provisional. Forecast issued at 10 AM ET today for Flushing itself.

Where the tournament stands

Day two went to form and then stopped: the favourite won seven of the ten cards this brief carried, and the three upsets were the three longest prices on the page. Marco Trungelliti, 36, lost the first set to love and came from two sets to one down through a rain delay to beat Juncheng Shang 0-6 7-6(5) 1-6 6-3 6-4. Alexei Popyrin, on a wildcard and eleven days after retiring injured, broke Grigor Dimitrov six times to end the Bulgarian's run through qualifying at 35. Maya Joint beat Liudmila Samsonova from a set down. And the two five-setters both went the distance: Dalibor Svrčina survived Valentin Royer 6-4 6-3 5-7 5-7 6-2, and Frances Tiafoe beat Martin Damm 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3 6-4 in 3h48, eight days after the Cincinnati final and three weeks after hand surgery. Diane Parry won too, 7-5 6-4, two days after her first title — which settles two of the three deep-run flags this brief raised yesterday, both against it. Today the third day brings nine more, and an eighty per cent chance of severe storms over eight unroofed courts.

Yesterday's brief, scored

Ten cards, ten results. The favourite won seven, and the three that went the other way were the three biggest prices on the page.

The deep-run flag has its first three results and they go against it. Yesterday's brief flagged three players coming off a deep run and said the flag was a caution, not a prediction, and that it would be scored. Diane Parry won 7-5 6-4, two days after her maiden title. Frances Tiafoe won in five sets over three hours forty-eight, eight days after a Masters final and three weeks after hand surgery. Only Valentin Royer lost — and he lost from two sets up, which is at least the shape the flag predicts. Their three prices implied 1.74 wins between them; they won two. After three, flagged players are doing slightly better than the market expected, not worse. Three is nothing, and the rule is to report the count and decline a verdict until there are fifteen. But it is worth saying at the start rather than quietly later: the flag has not found anything yet.

A correction. Yesterday's card on Harry Wendelken said he had “qualified for a Slam main draw on merit for the first time” and that his only previous appearance was a Wimbledon wildcard. That is wrong. He also came through qualifying at Wimbledon this year, so New York was his second consecutive Slam main draw, not his first. He then took Darderi to four sets over about four hours.

Trungelliti, 36, came from two sets to one down through a rain delay to beat Juncheng Shang 0-6 7-6(5) 1-6 6-3 6-4, reportedly his first US Open main-draw win in five years — after losing the first set to love. And Grigor Dimitrov's qualifying run ended: Popyrin, the wildcard who had retired injured eleven days earlier, broke him six times and won in four. Yesterday's card had that as the most concrete fitness fact on the page and it turned out not to matter.

Eleven days. Selected matches played to a finish have gone to the favourite 44 times in 86 — almost exactly half, for the first time in the run.

A better day than Sunday's nothing-from-three, and the four it won have something in common: Dimitrov, Borges, Joint and Damm were all cards where the model was cooler on the favourite than the market was, and in each case the favourite either lost or was pushed. Where the model was warmer than the market — Golubic, Royer, Shang — it lost. That is a pattern worth watching for another week before it means anything.

Both files carry the same date today for the first time in three editions — 31 August, one day old. The WTA table finally rebuilt overnight, and the effect on one player is worth recording: Diane Parry's hard-court rating moved from 94th to 55th once the file absorbed her Monterrey title. Sunday's brief said the model was flipping that card because it had not seen the title. It has now.

The closest price of the day and the model disagrees with it. Vidmanová is the better-ranked player, has the better season and played more recently — she lost a three-set quarterfinal to Bartunková at Monterrey four days ago — and the market still marginally prefers Bouzas Maneiro. Elo takes Vidmanová's side and flips the favourite. Career figures come from snapshots of different dates: Vidmanová's page is frozen at 8 June and misses her whole hard-court summer; Bouzas Maneiro's runs to 14 August and is the freshest on this page. Her two published season records differ by four matches on the same profile, so both are printed.

Health & notes

Vidmanová: no injury concerns found. Her 2026 has been built at the level below — a WTA 125 title at Figueira da Foz and a final at Oeiras — and last week she reached the Monterrey quarterfinals before losing to the eventual semifinalist Bartunková.
Bouzas Maneiro: no injury concerns found. Her defining result remains beating the defending champion Markéta Vondroušová in the first round at Wimbledon in 2024, confirmed across three independent sources. Her career high was 40th a year ago; she is 105th now, and 18-24 for the season.
AssessmentA pick'em on paper and a disagreement underneath it: the market makes the 105th-ranked player a shade favourite over the 90th, and Elo gives Vidmanová 57.9% and flips it. The tiebreak is probably recency — Vidmanová has played a competitive three-setter in the last week and Bouzas Maneiro's last confirmed match was eighteen days ago, which is the sort of thing a market prices and a rating cannot see.

Buse won the Winston-Salem title on Saturday and is on court on Tuesday. The confirmed part of that week is three matches and eight sets across the quarterfinal, semifinal and final — two of the three went the distance — and he played at least five matches in all, though two early-round scores could not be certified because one aggregator recycled the same scoreline across two different opponents. Giron is the opposite case entirely: one match in thirty days, a first-round defeat at Winston-Salem to a player outside the top 300. His career hard-court record is the argument for him, 315-198, but that page is frozen at November 2024.

Health & notes

Buse — won a title three days ago, his second of the season. Winston-Salem, Saturday 29 August, beating Arthur Fery 6-3 6-2 in 77 minutes, after three sets against both Juan Manuel Cerúndolo and Benjamin Bonzi on the two days before. It takes him to a career high of about 30th, from 135th a year ago. No reporting on his condition or travel since the final could be found. This brief flags a deep run as a caution and says plainly that it is a caution: he is the form player on this card and has had the least recovery on it.
Giron: no injury concerns found. He is 33, American, and has played once in a month — losing his Winston-Salem opener to Dhakshineswar Suresh. A Winston-Salem match against Valentin Royer is listed as cancelled rather than played, and the reason could not be established.
AssessmentThe seed is priced up and the flag says be careful, and for once the two arguments are cleanly opposed on the same card. Buse has the recent title, the head-to-head, the ranking and a model line that likes him more than the market does at 62.2%. Against that: three days, five matches in a week, and an opponent whose entire recent record is one bad afternoon — which is a small sample rather than evidence of decline.

The market has the 120th-ranked player favoured over the 54th, and it is not an error. Zheng beat Marozsán three weeks ago, has the better season record — 24-13 against 19-21 — and is in on a main-draw wildcard as the reigning NCAA singles champion. Marozsán has played more recently, reaching the Winston-Salem quarterfinals before losing to Duckworth on 28 August. Career rows are snapshots: Marozsán's page is frozen at 5 January and Zheng's at October 2025, so neither reflects this summer.

Health & notes

Marozsán: no injury concerns found. He is 26 and best known for beating Alcaraz in Rome in 2023. His clay record, 198-113, dwarfs his hard-court 71-48.
Zheng: no injury concerns found. He is 22, American, in on a wildcard earned by winning the NCAA singles title, and at Cincinnati he was bidding to become the first American qualifier to reach that last 16 since 1997.
AssessmentA wildcard favoured over a top-60 player, on the strength of one match eighteen days ago and a season record fifteen games better. Elo very nearly agrees, giving Zheng 53.7%, which is the smallest disagreement between the two lines on this page. The number nobody is pricing is that Marozsán has played three matches in the last fortnight and Zheng has played none since 18 August.

The surface split is the whole card. Ugo Carabelli is 360-200 on clay and 40-44 on outdoor hard, and 0-9 on grass — one of the most lopsided records the brief has printed, and his page is one of the few that is genuinely current. Struff is 105-115 on hard, which is not good either, but he reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon this year at 36. Ugo Carabelli's last match was a Cancún Challenger defeat on 21 August that reads as a retirement in the record — the second set is shown incomplete at 5-0 — though the circumstance could not be confirmed, so only the completed first set is counted.

Health & notes

Ugo Carabelli: no current injury concerns found. A correction to the search, not to the page: an ATP report of him retiring hurt against Shelton at Cincinnati surfaced under 2026 queries but is dated 11 August 2025, a year old, and has been excluded.
Struff: no injury concerns found beyond his age. He is 36 and having the best Slam year of his career, having beaten Hurkacz in five to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals before losing to Sinner. His career page is frozen at January 2025.
AssessmentA clay-court specialist with a losing hard-court record against a 36-year-old who just made his first Slam quarterfinal, and the market's 66/34 looks about right for that. Elo is warmer on the Argentine at 42.2%, an eight-point gap, mostly because a rating cannot see that 360 of his 402 career wins came on a surface nobody is playing on this fortnight.

An 18-year-old seeded 14th against a 28-year-old ranked 41st, and the season records run the other way from the ranking gap — Jovic 21-11, Frech 15-20. Frech's recent form is the better-documented of the two: at Cincinnati she beat the 26th seed Ostapenko 6-1 6-3 and Ruzic 6-2 7-5 before losing to Rybakina 6-4 7-6(2) on 17 August, three matches and six sets, all straight-setters. Jovic's Cincinnati ended in the round of 16 against Bouzková, date and score unconfirmed. Jovic's career page is frozen at 4 January and so predates essentially her entire breakout — treat 56-23 on hard as a pre-season baseline, not a current figure.

Health & notes

Jovic: no injury concerns found. She is 18, ranked and seeded 14th, and her 2026 includes a Hobart final and a 6-0 6-1 win over Putintseva at the Australian Open — Putintseva being on this same card in match 07.
Frech: no injury concerns found. Her 15-20 season undersells the last month: three straight-set performances at Cincinnati including a comfortable win over a seed.
AssessmentThe price says three-to-one and the underlying numbers do not obviously support it: Frech has the better recent fortnight and the seed's own career figures are a snapshot from before she became a seed. Elo agrees with the direction but is eight points cooler at 64.2%, which is the sort of gap that usually means the market has priced a breakout the rating has not yet absorbed. This is the same file that was five days behind Diane Parry's title on Sunday.

The other half of Saturday's Winston-Salem final is on this card too. Fery lost it 6-3 6-2 to Buse, three days ago, having beaten Kovacevic in three the day before and taken a semifinal in which Duckworth retired after one set — so three matches and six completed sets in the last week, and a fourth opponent who could not finish. Musetti has not played since losing the Cincinnati quarterfinal to Tiafoe on 22 August. His career page is frozen at September 2025 and therefore shows nothing of a 2026 dominated by injury.

Health & notes

Fery — runner-up three days ago, and the second deep-run flag on this page. Winston-Salem, five matches across the week ending Saturday, beaten in the final by the man in match 02. He is the mirror image of Buse: same tournament, same week, same three days' rest, and a price nine times longer. If the flag is measuring anything real, these two cards are where it will show.
Musetti — a 2026 wrecked by injury, and this is his fourth event back. He retired against Djokovic at the Australian Open with a leg injury, withdrew from Miami with an arm problem, and then withdrew from both Roland Garros and Wimbledon entirely — confirmed by the tour's own withdrawal announcements for each. He returned at Washington, reached the quarterfinals there and again at Cincinnati, where the loss to Tiafoe extended his wait for a top-25 win since January. No new issue has been reported, but a player seeded 13 who has missed two majors is not the player the seeding describes.
AssessmentA four-to-one price between two 24-year-olds where one has played five matches in the last week and the other has played three since January's Australian Open. Elo is far warmer on the underdog than the market, giving Fery 41.2% against 22.6% — an eighteen-point gap, the widest on this page — because the rating has watched Fery reach a final and has not watched Musetti sit out two Slams. Both lines are guessing at different things.

The seed is the one to worry about here. Bencic has a hip problem she has called nagging since Wimbledon: it forced a walkover out of the Toronto quarterfinal on 11 August, and her Cincinnati ended around 15–16 August in circumstances two sources describe differently — one says a walkover to Boisson before she played, the other that she played and retired a set down. That conflict could not be resolved and neither version is asserted. She is not on the withdrawal list. Putintseva's own lead-in is poor in a different way: three North American events without a main-draw win, the last of them a defeat in qualifying at Monterrey. Her career splits could not be retrieved at all.

Health & notes

Bencic — two tournament-ending hip incidents in the three weeks before this match. A walkover out of the Toronto quarterfinal on 11 August, and an early Cincinnati exit around 15–16 August attributed to the same issue. On the day of the Toronto withdrawal she said she still felt she could get better for the US Open. She has not played a completed match since, so this is her first competitive test in a fortnight, on a hip she has been managing since July.
Putintseva: no injury concerns found. She is 31 and 16-13 for the season, but 0-3 in the last month and beaten in qualifying at Monterrey. She lost 6-0 6-1 to Iva Jovic, on this same card in match 05, at the Australian Open in January.
AssessmentFour-to-one on a seed who has not finished a match in over a fortnight and has twice pulled out of one with the same hip, against an opponent who has not won a main-draw match in three attempts. The two lines are almost identical — 21.2% against 20.8%, the closest agreement on the page — which is what happens when neither of them can see a fitness question. That question is the card.

Not researched
This card was not researched. It carries a verified price and a verified rating and nothing else — no head-to-head, no match logs, no career records, no injury scan. It is included because it was commissioned, and the gap is marked rather than filled.

The rating is the story and it is extraordinary. Jodar is sixth in the world by Elo at nineteen, and eighth on hard court — above every other player in this edition including the top seed's opponent, and within touching distance of the very top. He is seeded 12th here, which means the ranking has not caught up with whatever the rating has been watching. Kokkinakis is 41st on hard and 30 years old. Everything else on this card is an em-dash because the research was not done.

Health & notes

Both players: no injury scan was run. This card had no research budget spent on it, so the absence of an injury note here means nothing was looked for — not that nothing was found. That is a different statement from the one on every other card in this edition and is marked as such.
AssessmentA ten-to-one price and a rating that says the favourite is a top-ten player already. The two lines disagree by fourteen points — the market has Jodar at 87.1% and Elo at 72.7% — which is the unusual case of the market being more confident than the model about a nineteen-year-old. Both may be right that he wins; nothing else about this match was established, and the card says so.

Zverev is the top seed because the world No. 1 is not here. Jannik Sinner withdrew from this US Open with a knee injury, which moved Zverev up to the first seeding despite his being ranked second. His 2026 is the best of his career: he won the French Open in June, his first Grand Slam title after years of near-misses, then lost the Wimbledon final to Sinner in four. His last match was a Cincinnati round-of-16 defeat to Tommy Paul on 20 August in which Paul saved a match point. The season figure shown is a floor, from 20 June, and predates both the title and the Wimbledon run.

Health & notes

Zverev: no current injury concerns found. The history is long — ankle surgery in 2022, a back withdrawal at Hamburg this year, and a knee scare after a fall in the Wimbledon final on 12 July — but he played a full Cincinnati fortnight in August with nothing reported since.
Sonego: no injury concerns found. He is 31 and lost to James Duckworth at Winston-Salem last week, 7-5 6-3 — the same Duckworth who then beat Marozsán, from match 03, and retired against Fery, from match 06. His career hard-court record is a losing one, 85-92.
AssessmentSixteen-to-one, a 6-0 head-to-head and the only roof on the grounds, which on a day forecast for severe storms may be the most valuable thing either player has. The two lines agree almost exactly, 88.3% against 86.5%. There is no argument to make here and the brief is not going to invent one: it is on the page because it was asked for, and because the roof makes it the only match today that is certain to be played.
Also on the schedule
Nothing was filtered. These nine were chosen by hand from the third day of the US Open main draw and all nine are carded, in a day when eight of the nine are on unroofed courts under an 80% chance of severe thunderstorms.
