The Daily Lob

Vol. I · No. 15Monday, 31 August 2026US Open · first round

Ten first-round matches on day two. Three players arrive off a deep run — a title, a title and a Masters final — which this brief now flags as a caution and, from today, scores. And the two ratings files disagree with each other about what week it is.

Conditions

US OpenFlushing Meadows, New York
Partly sunny through the rest of the afternoon, high 80°F (27°C), southeast wind 3–5 mph. Mostly cloudy overnight with a low of 70°F (21°C), precipitation chance rising to 70% and showers likely with a possible thunderstorm between 11 PM and 5 AM. Generally less than a tenth of an inch, more in any storm.
A benign afternoon and a wet night, with the boundary falling across the last match on this card. Nine of the ten are done or well under way before the rain arrives. The exception is Damm v Tiafoe, second on in the Armstrong night session at about 8:10 PM — a three-hour match there runs into the 11 PM window. Armstrong has a roof, so rain would not stop it; the roof is the reason that card is the only one whose timing is safe. Forecast issued at 2 PM ET today for Flushing itself, not a neighbouring station.

Where the tournament stands

Day one went almost entirely to form. All three of yesterday's cards went to the favourite — Vekić beat Talia Gibson 6-2 4-6 6-3 over 2h33, Alexandrova needed sixty-six minutes to beat McCartney Kessler 6-2 6-2, and Leylah Fernandez beat Shuai Zhang 6-3 6-2 — and the model lost all three. The bigger news arrived from Mexico on Saturday, where Diane Parry won the first WTA title of her career at 23, beating second seed Elise Mertens 6-4 0-6 6-3 in 2h31 the day after saving seven set points against Ann Li. She is in New York today, two days later, and opens this card. Also new since Friday: Ignacio Buse took the Winston-Salem title, Frances Tiafoe lost the Cincinnati final to Arthur Fils eight days ago having had a cyst removed from his hand a fortnight before that, and Grigor Dimitrov came through US Open qualifying — two matches won, the third a walkover — to reach a Slam main draw the hard way at 35.

Yesterday's brief, scored

Three cards, three results, and the favourite won all three — the first clean sweep the brief has recorded.

MatchVegasResult
01Gibson v Vekić50 / 50Vekić 6-2 4-6 6-3 — 2h33 favourite
02Kessler v Alexandrova40 / 60Alexandrova 6-2 6-2, in 66 minutes favourite
03Zhang v Fernandez32 / 68Fernandez 6-3 6-2 favourite

A flag that came to nothing, stated as plainly as one that came off. Sunday's card on Alexandrova was built around her workload: seven matches and twenty sets in thirty days across three tournaments back to back, and a defeat three days earlier. She beat Kessler 6-2 6-2 in sixty-six minutes. Against that, Kessler had been idle sixteen days and the card noted that too. On this occasion the lay-off read better than the load, and the honest summary is that the card raised two competing explanations and the result picked the other one.

The Gibson card was the most wrong. The model made her a 58.7% pick and flipped the favourite on the strength of a hard-court rating 35 places above her overall one; she lost 6-2 4-6 6-3. That was the edition's most interesting disagreement and it resolved against the model. It also came with a warning attached — the rating was six days old and the note said “Gibson's 45th on hard court is the number to be most careful with” — which is some comfort, but a hedge is not a correct call.

Ten days. Selected matches played to a finish have gone to the favourite 37 times in 76 — still, narrowly, under half.

Elo v Vegas

The model's worst day: closer on none of three. Across nine days it stands at 19 of 43.

MatchVegasEloWon
Gibson v Vekić49.758.7VekićVegas closer
Kessler v Alexandrova39.740.1AlexandrovaVegas closer
Zhang v Fernandez32.338.6FernandezVegas closer

Two of the three were close — Kessler and Alexandrova were separated by four tenths of a point, which is a coin toss dressed as a disagreement — but the Gibson call was not, and losing the flip is the expensive kind of loss. Nineteen from forty-three is a fraction below even and the direction of travel over the last two days is downward.

Today the two files disagree with each other about what day it is. The ATP table rebuilt this morning and is stamped 31 August; the WTA table has not moved since 24 August. So the seven men's cards below carry a rating that has seen the whole US Open build-up, and the three women's cards carry one that has not — including card 01, where the rating was calculated five days before its subject won the first title of her career. That is not a criticism of the file. It is the reason the model and the market disagree about her, and it is the single most instructive thing on the page today.

The empty cells are the story of the research, not of the players. Golubic's source page served data from February 2025 today, so nothing about her 2026 could be established — no log, no record, no workload, and a ranking figure carried at roughly 56 that could not be confirmed. Parry's career surface splits could not be retrieved either. What is confirmed is the number that matters: she played a tour final on Saturday and is on court in New York on Monday.

Health & notes

Parry — won the first title of her career on Saturday and is playing two days later. At Monterrey she beat second seed Elise Mertens 6-4 0-6 6-3 in 2h31 to take her first WTA singles title at 23, after saving seven set points against Ann Li in the semifinal the day before. Then Mexico to New York. Two days, a first title, and a Grand Slam first round. This brief flags a deep run as a caution and is explicit that it is a caution and not a prediction: she is in the best form of anyone on this card and has had less recovery than anyone on it, and which of those decides the match is not something the page claims to know.
Golubic: no injury concerns found — though with no 2026 log available, the absence of a finding is weaker evidence than usual. She is 33 and has a 575-363 career record across every level, more matches than anyone else in this edition.
AssessmentThe closest price on the card, and all three readings disagree. The market has moved onto Parry and makes her a marginal favourite; the Elo file was built on 24 August and has not seen the title, so it still makes Golubic a 58.1% pick and flips the favourite; and this brief's own flag says the title is a cost as well as a credential. The model is not being clever here — it is simply out of date, which is worth watching precisely because the market's newer information and the model's older information point opposite ways.

Eight matches and nineteen sets in the month, and nothing at all in the last nine days. Royer won five matches in five days at the Kingston Challenger to take the title on 22 August, then stopped. That is an unusual shape: a heavy block, then a full rest. Svrčina's page is another stale one — no 2026 matches at all — so his entire column is unavailable, including whether he has played this month.

Health & notes

Royer — won a Challenger title nine days ago, five matches in five days. Kingston, 18–22 August: beat Queiroz Miguel, Zink, Bueno, Chidekh and Martínez, the last 6-4 6-2. Nineteen sets in the month against an unknown number for his opponent. Nine days is the outer edge of this brief's deep-run window and he has had a full week off since, which is the version of a deep run most likely to be a benefit rather than a cost.
Svrčina: no injury concerns found, but with no 2026 record retrievable that finding carries little weight. His only traceable recent appearance is Cincinnati qualifying on 12 August, result unknown.
AssessmentElo flips this one too, making Royer a 57.0% pick where the market has Svrčina marginally ahead — and here the ATP file is current, rebuilt this morning, so it has seen Kingston. The market may be pricing the head-to-head, which is 2-0 to Svrčina and entirely on clay. On this evidence the model has the better of the argument, which is not something this page says often.

Neither workload column could be built. Hanfmann's source page has served nothing since February 2026 and Tabilo's returned an entry for a match against Zverev that had not been played and was not on his schedule — a fabricated row, discarded. The career rows are the usable part: both are clay players by record, Hanfmann 313-160 on clay against 83-75 on outdoor hard, Tabilo 274-164 against 132-90. Tabilo's hard-court Elo is nonetheless his better surface rating, which cuts the other way.

Health & notes

Hanfmann: no injury concerns found, with the same caveat that no 2026 log was available. At 34 he is among the oldest men in the draw. His two published rankings differ by 36 places on the same week, 54 against 90, and neither could be confirmed.
Tabilo: no injury concerns found. Seeded 25. One Cincinnati win over Struff was found on a source with a documented history of reporting winners backwards, so it is reported here as unverified rather than as fact.
AssessmentTwo clay-court records meeting on a hard court, with the seed favoured by four and a half points more than the model thinks he should be. The honest position is that this card is thin: without either workload column, the only live evidence is a 2024 head-to-head and two career rows, and the market's 55/45 is as good a guess as anything here.

The thinnest card in this edition and it is named as such. Shang's record could not be traced past January 2025 and his ranking, given here as roughly 253, rests on two low-confidence sources; a player ranked 253 taking a 63% price implies the market knows something the file does not, most likely a protected or recovering ranking. Trungelliti's log stops in mid-June, so his whole summer is missing. The season figure shown for him is through mid-June only and is a floor. Career rows: Trungelliti is 558-335 on clay and 97-83 on hard, one of the starkest splits on this page.

Health & notes

Shang: no injury concerns found, though with a log this incomplete that is close to meaningless. He is 21 and his career high is 47, well above where he is now, which usually indicates a long absence.
Trungelliti: no injury concerns found. He is 36 and reached a career-high 76 in April this year, at an age when almost nobody does. How he entered this draw — direct acceptance, qualifying or lucky loser — could not be established.
AssessmentA card built on career records and a price, because almost nothing else could be sourced for either man. The model agrees with the market's direction and goes further, giving Shang 69.4% against 63.1%. Both are reading a hard-court record of 75-43 against 97-83 and a twenty-year age gap in the same direction.

Two men arriving by the two least usual routes. Dimitrov, a former world No. 3, played the qualifying event: he beat Giustino 6-0 6-3 and Skatov 7-6(5) 6-4, then got a walkover in the final round when Virtanen withdrew — so two matches and four sets, with the walkover counting zero, and he is the rare qualifier who has already won here this week. Popyrin is in on a wildcard, and his last match is the reason: he retired down 5-2 to Gaston at Quebec City on 20 August, which is one match and zero completed sets, the counting rule this brief applies to a retirement inside the first set.

Health & notes

Popyrin — retired injured eleven days ago, apparently groin or thigh. Quebec City, round of 16, 20 August, trailing 5-2 to Hugo Gaston. Reported at the time as ten days before the US Open main draw. His ranking has fallen to about 139 this month from a peak that included the 2024 Canadian Open title, and coverage on 30 August framed his year around acknowledged mental-health struggles rather than the body. No withdrawal followed, so he is expected to play — but a retirement eleven days out is the most concrete fitness fact on this page.
Dimitrov: no current injury concerns found, and he came through two qualifying matches without visible trouble. The background is that he retired with a pectoral injury while leading Sinner at Wimbledon in 2025 and missed that year's US Open as a result. He is 35 and entered qualifying for the first time here since 2009.
AssessmentThe market makes the qualifier a 63% favourite over the wildcard, and the unusual thing is that both numbers are defensible: Dimitrov has won two matches on these courts this week, and Popyrin has not finished a match since 20 August. Elo is four points cooler on Dimitrov at 59.3%, which is what a rating built on a career rather than a fortnight would say about a 35-year-old.

Both logs are partial. Borges is confirmed to have beaten Kokkinakis and Francisco Cerúndolo at Cincinnati before losing to Rublev in the round of 32, but no dates or scores could be retrieved, so his set counts are unavailable. Tien reached the Canadian Open semifinal in early August, losing to Shelton 6-2 6-3, then went out to Tiafoe in the Cincinnati third round on 19 August. The career rows badly understate him: his page stopped updating in February, so 116-39 on hard is missing his whole 2026.

Health & notes

Tien — playing through a left-arm problem he has carried for over a month. On 13 August he described it as three weeks old, said he wore strapping through the Canadian Open and withdrew from the doubles to protect it while continuing in singles, and said that if he really went after a serve “something bad will happen”. He played on and lost in Cincinnati six days later. Nothing since says it has resolved. He is 20, seeded 14, and reached a career-high 18 in May.
Borges: no injury concerns found. He is 29 and 182-86 on outdoor hard, comfortably his best surface, and beat a top-thirty opponent in Cincinnati this month.
AssessmentThe market and the model agree almost exactly — 35.8% against 33.9% for Borges — which is the closest agreement on the page and unusual for a card where one player has a sourced, current, unresolved injury. Neither line prices the arm, because neither line can; the head-to-head from January is on the seed's side, and Borges's own hard-court record is the case against.

Set counts could not be built for either player — the source pages returned nothing past February 2026 for Snigur and April 2025 for Shnaider. What is confirmed is where each stopped: Snigur beat Starodubtseva at Cincinnati then lost to Madison Keys 4-6 6-3 6-3 on 16 August; Shnaider reached the Cincinnati round of 16 and lost to Rybakina 6-4 6-4 on 19 August. Neither has played since, so both come in with roughly a fortnight's rest. The career rows favour Snigur's surface case — 142-67 on outdoor hard against Shnaider's 80-55 — while Shnaider is the clay player of the two at 93-36.

Health & notes

Snigur: no injury concerns found. She beat Simona Halep in the first round here in 2022 as a qualifier, which remains the defining result of her career; she has never gone past the second round of a major since.
Shnaider: no injury concerns found. Seeded 15 and ranked 16, left-handed, 22, and her last outing was a competitive two-set loss to Rybakina.
AssessmentA four-to-one price on a match where the underdog has the better hard-court record and both players are equally rested, which is usually a sign the market is pricing level rather than surface. Elo agrees with the direction but is three points warmer on Snigur. The card is thin on current form for both, and the fortnight since either last played is the reason there is nothing more recent to weigh.

Joint came through Monterrey qualifying, beating Putintseva 0-6 6-3 6-1 on 23 August, then lost her opening main-draw match to Udvardy on 25 August; the game score for that loss could not be sourced. Samsonova's last outing was a Cincinnati defeat to Gauff, 2-6 6-4 6-1 on 16 August. Set counts are unavailable for both. Career rows: Samsonova is the more experienced by a distance, 373-246 against 133-82, with an almost exactly even hard-and-clay split.

Health & notes

Joint: no injury concerns found. She is 20 with a career high of 28 and is currently around 75 — a fast rise followed by a drift, and she needed qualifying to reach the Monterrey main draw last week.
Samsonova: no injury concerns found. Her recent form is unremarkable: one win over Joint in Toronto and one loss to Gauff, which took the head-to-head against Gauff to 0-5.
AssessmentThe market's three-to-one is built on the meeting three weeks ago and on a 45-against-75 ranking gap, and the model is a little cooler at 32.1% for the underdog. The most interesting number is one neither line uses: Joint has played twice as recently, and Samsonova has not won a match since 7 August.

Set counts are unavailable on both sides and the figures shown are floors. Wendelken came through three qualifying rounds, the last of them on Friday 29 August, 6-7(3) 7-6(5) 7-6(5) over the 14th seed Gaubas — three tiebreaks and a set down. Darderi's fortnight ended badly: he lost the Winston-Salem round of 16 6-1 6-0 on 26 August. The career row is the argument the price rests on and it cuts the wrong way: Darderi is 197-104 on clay and exactly 30-30 on outdoor hard.

Health & notes

Darderi — visibly bandaged and reported as fatigued five days ago. Coverage of his 6-1 6-0 defeat at Winston-Salem on 26 August described a bandage under his left knee and a player who looked spent, with commentary that he had not truly rested all season while defending ranking points. No injury was declared and no withdrawal followed, so this is reported as a caution and not a diagnosis — but conceding one game to a player outside the top eighty is itself the evidence.
Wendelken: no injury concerns found. He is 24, ranked about 196, and has qualified for a Slam main draw on merit for the first time — his only previous appearance was a Wimbledon wildcard this year, where he lost to Royer, the subject of card 02.
AssessmentThe widest gap on the page between what a price says and what the rows underneath it say. Darderi is seeded 21 and even on hard courts across his whole career, and he was beaten 6-1 6-0 five days ago looking unwell; Wendelken has just won three qualifying matches including one from a set down over a seed. Wendelken is unrated by Elo — genuinely below the ten-match threshold rather than missing from the file — so there is no model line to set against the market here.

An all-American night match between a man who beat the world No. 1's conqueror and a man who reached a Masters final on a repaired hand. Damm beat Daniil Medvedev at Winston-Salem on 25 August — confirmed by three independent sources, though the score and how far he went afterwards could not be established. Tiafoe has not played since 23 August, so nothing in the last seven days; his thirty-day count is at least five matches but the set total is unavailable. Career rows for Tiafoe could not be retrieved at all.

Health & notes

Tiafoe — hand surgery three weeks ago, a Masters final eight days ago, and a hip flagged during it. The sequence is unusual. He retired against Rinderknech at Montreal on 6 August, trailing 6-2 2-0, then had a cyst removed from his right hand around 7–8 August. He returned at Cincinnati, beat Auger-Aliassime, Musetti and Nakashima, and lost the final to Arthur Fils 6-3 1-6 6-0 on 23 August, taking a medical timeout for a hip problem during it. He said afterwards he would be right in a week. That is a deep run, a fresh operation and a hip niggle inside a month — the compound case this brief's deep-run flag exists for.
Damm: no injury concerns found. He is 22, left-handed, the son of a Czech doubles major champion, and his win over Medvedev last week was called the best of his life. His two published rankings differ by thirteen places and neither is dated to today.
AssessmentThree-to-one is a lot for a match where the favourite has had a hand operated on this month and left a Masters final with his hip being looked at. Elo is cooler still on the underdog than the market, at 22.6% against 25.0%, because the ratings see a 15th-ranked player against a 100th and nothing else. What both miss is that Tiafoe's last three weeks contain a retirement, an operation, a final and a medical timeout, and his opponent's contain a win over Medvedev.

Nothing was filtered. All ten matches were chosen by hand from the second day of the US Open main draw, and all ten are carded. Five had already started when this went out and each card says so — see the note on timing in the footer.
