The Daily Lob

Vol. I · No. 12Thursday, 27 August 2026Winston-Salem QF · Monterrey QF · US Open qualifying

Nine matches across three events, and the brief covers qualifying for the first time. In the final round at Flushing Meadows, a former world No. 3 and a former US Open semifinalist are both trying to play their way into the main draw.

Conditions

Winston-Salem OpenWinston-Salem, NC
Patchy fog before 10 AM, then a slight chance of showers becoming a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 AM. Otherwise mostly cloudy, high near 86°F (30°C). Calm wind becoming south-west around 6 mph in the afternoon. Precipitation chance 50%.
A 50% storm risk over four quarterfinals stacked on one court. Stadium Court runs from two in the afternoon to late evening with nothing scheduled elsewhere, so any interruption pushes everything behind it. The last match on is already a 'followed by'.
US Open qualifyingFlushing Meadows, NY
Partly sunny, high near 83°F (28°C). A slight chance of showers before 11 AM, a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11 AM and 2 PM, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 PM. South wind 7–16 mph. Precipitation chance 70%, with half to three-quarters of an inch expected.
The worse of the two American venues, and qualifying courts have no roof. All three matches here start between 11 AM and 1 PM, squarely inside the thunderstorm window. For players trying to reach a Slam main draw, a rain-broken final qualifying round is the least welcome shape a day can take.
Abierto GNP SegurosMonterrey, Mexico
Sunny to partly cloudy, high 36–37°C (97–99°F). Wind easterly, light to moderate. Precipitation forecasts disagree: one service gives 10%, another 50%.
Extreme heat again, and Wednesday's programme ran hours late — matches scheduled for 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM local started around 8:30 PM and 10:40 PM. No Thursday order of play had been published anywhere when this went out, so neither Monterrey match below carries a court or a start time.

Where the tournament stands

Wednesday's round of 16 at Winston-Salem went almost entirely against the seeds, and one result stood out even so: Botic van de Zandschulp beat second seed Luciano Darderi 6-1 6-0 in 68 minutes, conceding a single game. Aleksandar Kovacevic removed seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 7-6(1), a second seed in two days; Benjamin Bonzi needed 57 minutes to beat Rinky Hijikata 6-1 6-1; and Fabián Marozsán ended Martin Damm's week 6-2 6-3, the Medvedev-slayer getting no second act. Sebastián Báez retired trailing Juan Manuel Cerúndolo 6-2 4-0. In Monterrey Alycia Parks beat third seed Maja Chwalińska from a set down, while Ekaterina Alexandrova and Clara Tauson started after ten at night and the result had still not surfaced by press time. Today brings four Winston-Salem quarterfinals on one court, two Monterrey quarterfinals, and the final round of US Open qualifying — where Grigor Dimitrov, once world No. 3, is one win from a main draw.

Yesterday's brief, scored

Nine items, eight played and one still outstanding. Of the eight, the favourite won two — and six seeds went out across the day.

Item 01 has no result. Alexandrova v Tauson was scheduled for six o'clock in Monterrey and started after ten; it had not resolved anywhere by the time this went out. Wednesday's whole programme there ran four hours late in 37°C heat. It is left blank rather than guessed, and will be scored when it lands.

The three flips split two-one against the model. Elo was right about Damm — it gave the Medvedev-slayer 39.5% where the market made him favourite, and Marozsán won 6-2 6-3 in 97 minutes. It was wrong about Altmaier, and the Alexandrova call is the one still hanging. On the day it went two from seven.

Van de Zandschulp beat the second seed 6-1 6-0 in 68 minutes, conceding one game — the most emphatic result the brief has recorded. The card here had flagged Darderi as 30-30 lifetime on outdoor hard against 197-104 on clay, with an Elo falling from 36th overall to 82nd on the surface. That one read exactly as written.

Eight days. Selected matches have gone to the favourite 27 times in 61 — comfortably under half across the whole run.

Elo v Vegas

Elo was closer on 2 of seven yesterday, on the seven cards that carried both lines and produced a result. Across six days it stands at 17 of 33 — almost exactly even.

Even is roughly the right answer, and it is where this was always likely to settle. A weekly-rebuilt ratings file and a live betting market are looking at the same evidence with different blind spots — the model cannot see fatigue or a midnight finish, the market cannot see a career. Over thirty-three matches neither has separated from the other.

Three of today's nine carry no model line at all, and for a new reason. Tennis Abstract's ratings pages could not be fetched today after repeated attempts, so Dušan Lajović and all four Monterrey women have no current rating available. That is different from being unrated: they are in the table, the table could not be read. Publishing the fortnight-old figures instead would repeat exactly the error caught here on Monday, so those cards run on the market alone and say so.

Cerúndolo has had the cheapest two days in the draw: three sets across two matches, because Báez retired at 6-2 4-0 yesterday and the whole thing took 66 minutes. Buse spent 2h16 beating Altmaier. Two clay players on a hard court — Cerúndolo is 25-27 lifetime on outdoor hard, a losing record across 534 matches, and Buse's Elo falls from 73rd overall to 130th on hard, the steepest surface drop of anyone here.

Health & notes

Cerúndolo: no injury concerns found. Roughly a fifth of his career hard-court wins have come this season — he is 6-4 on the surface in 2026 against 25-27 lifetime.
Buse: no injury concerns found. He is 22, reached the Hamburg final this year, and has now beaten Walton and the sixteenth seed on consecutive days.
AssessmentThe tightest price on the card, between two Argentines-and-Peruvians raised on clay who are both having their best hard-court year. The model likes Cerúndolo ten points more than the market does, and the freshness argument agrees with it: he has played three sets in two days to Buse's five, and one of his opponents retired. The counter is that Buse just came through the longest match of the round.

Kovacevic has played three matches this week to Fery's two, and the third was a straight-sets win over the seventh seed. Fery has the better rating on both lines and the lighter legs. Note his career table is oddly shaped — 60-27 on outdoor hard against just 8-6 on clay and 97-29 indoors — which reflects a career built on British indoor courts rather than a weakness outdoors.

Health & notes

Fery: no injury concerns found. He reached the Wimbledon semifinal this year — and got there by beating Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round, 7-5 3-6 4-6 6-4 7-6. Dimitrov is item 09 today.
Kovacevic: no injury concerns found. He beat Karen Khachanov in Cincinnati, then Van Assche and Tsitsipas here on consecutive days. He is ranked 96 and defending points.
AssessmentBoth lines make Fery the favourite and the model makes him a heavier one — 68% against the market's 55%, a thirteen-point gap. Kovacevic is the counter-argument in person: he has beaten the eleventh seed and the seventh seed on consecutive days and is the only man left in this draw with three wins this week. There is also a thread worth pulling — Fery is here partly because of the win that sent Dimitrov towards the qualifying draw he is playing in today.

Géa is 7-0 in the last month and won an ATP title inside it. His hard-court record is the striking number: 65-18 on outdoor hard against 66-61 on clay — a 26-point win-rate gap on almost identical match volume, and 14-2 on hard in 2026 alone. His Elo agrees in an unusual way: his hard-court rating of 1760 is higher than his overall rating, and his hard rank of 44 sits 41 places above his overall 85.

Health & notes

Géa: no injury concerns found. On 2 August he beat defending champion Denis Shapovalov 6-3 6-4 to win Los Cabos, his first ATP title, having beaten third seed Francisco Cerúndolo and Coleman Wong on the way. He went from 127th to a career-high 82nd. Afterwards: 'I was really tense, to be honest — first final.' He is in qualifying only because the entry cut was set weeks before that run.
Basavareddy: no injury concerns found. Indian-American, born in Newport Beach, Stanford's Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year in 2024, career-high 99th in June 2025. He played Djokovic at the 2025 Australian Open as a nineteen-year-old wildcard — 'that walkout, with everyone clapping and then seeing the 10-time champion across the net.' He appears to have taken most of August off before Quebec City.
AssessmentTwo 21-year-olds one win from a Slam main draw, and the whole case for the Frenchman is on the surface row. Géa has won 78% of his outdoor hard-court matches and 52% of his clay ones; his rating is one of the few on tour that is better on hard than overall. He is also unbeaten in a month and an ATP champion since the start of it. Basavareddy has played three matches in thirty days and is ranked 163rd — but he was 99th fourteen months ago.

Twelve matches in thirty days against eight, and the gap this week is wider still — Bonzi has played five to van de Zandschulp's two. But Bonzi's last two were 2h11 and then 57 minutes, and the 57 minutes was a 6-1 6-1 dismantling of Hijikata. Van de Zandschulp needed 68 minutes to beat the second seed 6-1 6-0. Both arrive off the two most emphatic wins of the round. Bonzi's set counts are approximate; one match could not be read cleanly.

Health & notes

Bonzi — twelve matches in thirty days across four cities. No injury, but he has slotted Vancouver and Quebec City Challengers around Montreal, Cincinnati and this. Five matches in the last week alone, two of them from a set down. He has not lost since the Challenger.
van de Zandschulp: no 2026 injury concerns found. He beat Medvedev and Hurkacz back to back in Montreal three weeks ago, and demolished second seed Darderi 6-1 6-0 yesterday, conceding one game in 68 minutes. He was runner-up here last year and has never won a tour title.
AssessmentMarket and model agree to six-tenths of a point, which is as close as this page gets — both make the seed a clear favourite. What separates the two men is not form, since both won their last match in under an hour of playing time, but accumulation: Bonzi has played twelve matches in a month and five in a week, and van de Zandschulp has played eight and two. In a quarterfinal that is the whole question.

Duckworth has played nearly twice the tennis — nine matches and twenty-one sets in thirty days against five and eleven — and has beaten Norrie, de Minaur, Navone and Sonego inside it. He is also 34 and last on court at eight in the evening after a day with a 50% storm risk. The career split favours him: 330-206 on outdoor hard against Marozsán's 70-47.

Health & notes

Marozsán: no injury concerns found. He is 18-20 for the year, lost his Cincinnati opener to a qualifier, and has since beaten Kecmanović and the man who beat Medvedev.
Duckworth: no injury concerns found. At 34 he is the oldest man in the draw and is having the best month of anyone in it — six wins in eight, including three ranked opponents.
AssessmentThe seed is favourite on both lines and the record book disagrees with both. Duckworth is 330-206 on this surface against Marozsán's 70-47, has beaten four ranked players this month, and knocked out Sonego yesterday. The case against him is his age and the schedule: he is last on, on a day forecast to lose time to thunderstorms, having played three matches in four days.

An all-Czech quarterfinal, and the workload gap is enormous: Vidmanová has played ten matches in thirty days to Bartunková's four, including four here since Saturday because she came through qualifying. Bartunková has the head-to-head and the fresher legs, but spent 2h43 beating Liang on Wednesday. Vidmanová's printed career figures exclude 2026 entirely — the source page is a year stale, so her real totals are materially higher.

Health & notes

Vidmanová: no injury concerns found. Three weeks ago she reached the Memphis final, beating Sloane Stephens on the way, having won a single tour-level match in all of 2025. A former University of Georgia player, she was ranked 140th last October and is now around 90.
Bartunková: no injury concerns found. She was the 2023 Wimbledon girls' runner-up and served a six-month suspension in 2024 after a positive test that the ITIA accepted was caused by a contaminated milk-thistle supplement — verified by a WADA-accredited lab, with a finding of no significant fault and no intent. She is 69th at twenty.
AssessmentTwo Czechs, one who had to qualify and one who did not, and the qualifier is the one in form. Vidmanová has won eight of ten in the past month and reached a WTA final three weeks ago; Bartunková has played four matches in that time but has beaten her twice in the last year, both on hard. Neither carries a model line today — the ratings page could not be reached, so this card runs on the market alone.

Mertens had a first-round bye and is the freshest player in the Monterrey draw — one match this week. Starodubtseva has played two and beaten the seventh seed in the second. Mertens's career surface splits could not be published at all: her source page redirect-loops on every variant, so the career block below is empty rather than estimated.

Health & notes

Starodubtseva: no injury concerns found. Beating Janice Tjen gave her a first quarterfinal since she was runner-up in Charleston in April — her first WTA final, at 26. She came up without a ranking at all: 'I had no national or international ranking, only my UTR, and couldn't enter ITF tournaments.' She spent about eighteen months in Westchester coaching to pay for her own career, then crowdfunded it. 'Some people helped me create a GoFundMe.'
Mertens: no injury concerns found. She reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals this year, beating Rybakina in the third round, but has won one of three hard-court matches since. A former top-twenty singles player and former doubles world No. 1.
AssessmentThe most experienced player left in Monterrey against one of the least likely. Mertens is 30, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist this summer and a former doubles world No. 1; Starodubtseva is 26 and reached the tour without a ranking, funding herself by coaching and crowdfunding. The market makes it 65-35. There is no model line — the ratings page could not be reached today — so the market is the only opinion on offer.

The widest workload gap on the page. Wong has played ten matches and twenty-three sets in thirty days, four of them in the last week across two countries. Lajović has played two — both of them here this week — and nothing at all in the month before that. The surface row cuts the other way from the ages: Wong is 147-102 on outdoor hard, Lajović is 125-124, essentially break-even, against 414-270 on clay.

Health & notes

Wong: no injury concerns found, but the load is heavy. In August he became the first man from Hong Kong to reach the ATP top 100, climbing sixteen places after a Los Cabos semifinal in which he beat top seed Jiří Lehečka. He started the year 150th. He is in qualifying because the entry cut predates that surge.
Lajović: no dated injury item could be sourced, but he arrived at Flushing having not completed a match in roughly a month, and his first-round opponent retired in the third set. At 36 he is the oldest player on this page. Former world No. 23 and a Monte-Carlo finalist.
AssessmentA 22-year-old who has just become the first Hong Kong man in the top hundred against a 36-year-old former Monte-Carlo finalist whose ranking has slipped to 123. The market makes it 65-35 to youth, and the workload table explains both sides at once: Wong has played ten matches in a month, Lajović two. On clay this would be a different conversation — Lajović is 414-270 there and barely break-even on outdoor hard.

1.29 / 3.80 across an aggregate board, with a prediction market at 1.35. An earlier reading of this match had it backwards — one aggregator swaps player names against prices, and its own prose contradicted its own labels. Corrected here; the direction is now unanimous across three sources.

The surface row is the one to read, and it favours the older man heavily. Virtanen's career is built indoors — 133-54 there, but 33-38 on outdoor hard, a losing record on today's surface and the most lopsided split on the page. Dimitrov is 276-172 on outdoor hard. Dimitrov's Elo rank of 83 sits far above his ATP ranking of 137, because he has fallen on absence rather than defeats.

Health & notes

Dimitrov — a torn pectoral muscle on Centre Court, and fourteen months of consequences. At Wimbledon 2025 he led Jannik Sinner two sets to love in the fourth round and retired in tears with a torn pectoral — the fifth consecutive Grand Slam he had retired from. He did not play again until November. In April 2026 a first-round loss at Monte-Carlo ended a 710-week run inside the top 100, fourteen years unbroken since March 2012, and he fell to his worst ranking since 2010. Before his comeback event he said: 'I had never been off the courts for so long, so it has been a great mental challenge… For months, I haven't been able to spend as much time on the court as I would like.'
Virtanen: no injury concerns found. He is 32-20 for the year but eleven of those wins came on grass. He lost to Coleman Wong — playing item 08 today — in Cincinnati qualifying two weeks ago, in two tiebreaks.
AssessmentA former world No. 3 playing the final round of qualifying to reach a Slam main draw, and he is not the only one: Jack Draper, a US Open semifinalist two years ago, is in the same draw, down to 147th with recurring bone bruising in his left arm. Dimitrov's fall was not a decline in results so much as an absence from them — which is why the model still rates him 83rd in the world while the ranking says 137th. The market goes further, giving him 75% where Elo says 64%. He has already had one redemption chapter this year: a Wimbledon fourth round on a wildcard, beating Menšík and Berrettini in five. The man who ended it, Arthur Fery, is playing item 02.

Nothing was filtered. These nine were chosen by hand across three events. This is the first edition to include qualifying: the brief has covered main draws only until today, and the three US Open matches below are the final qualifying round, where a win means a place in the main draw and a loss means the tournament is over.
