That high is a mid-afternoon figure and both of these are night matches — 7:30 PM local and later — so they should be played in the mid-seventies rather than the high nineties. Worth stating precisely, because one of the four women on court collapsed with heat illness a month ago.

Where the tournament stands

Tuesday was carnage for the seeds: the 1, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12 and 14 all lost. The biggest was the biggest of the week — Martin Damm, a 22-year-old American wildcard ranked 92nd, beat top seed Daniil Medvedev 7-5 6-3 in 82 minutes for the first top-ten win of his career, calling it the best win of his life. Rinky Hijikata played the match of the tournament, beating fifth seed Raphaël Collignon 3-6 7-6(7) 7-6(5) over 3h10 and saving it in two tiebreaks. Mees Rottgering, the Wake Forest qualifier, took out 14th seed Tomáš Macháč. And Cruz Hewitt's week ended, the seventeen-year-old losing 6-1 7-5 to Arthur Fery but taking the second set to 7-5 against a Wimbledon semifinalist. Today is the round of 16 at Winston-Salem and the second round in Monterrey, where the top four seeds — including Ekaterina Alexandrova and Maja Chwalińska — had first-round byes and play their opening match tonight.

Item 01 was the match of the tournament. Hijikata beat Collignon 3-6 7-6(7) 7-6(5) in 3h10, saving it in two tiebreaks — and the flag carried here was Collignon's inactivity and his 46-33 hard-court record against a ranking built on clay. He is now 0-5 since the Gstaad final. Hijikata plays again at two o'clock today.

Cruz Hewitt's week ended, and creditably. The seventeen-year-old wildcard lost 6-1 7-5 to Arthur Fery, priced at around 20%, and took the second set to 7-5 against a Wimbledon semifinalist ranked 340 places above him. He leaves with a tour-level win and no fairytale, which is the honest version.

Yesterday was the first day the two lines competed on equal terms — the ratings file had rebuilt overnight, so for once the model was not being scored on a fortnight-old view of the world. It lost, five to three. That is roughly what should happen, and it is worth saying plainly after a first week in which the model kept winning against a handicap it should never have had.

Its one clear hit was van de Zandschulp, where it gave him 74% against the market's 58% and he won 6-2 6-0 in seventy minutes. Its worst miss was the opposite call on Collignon, rated 63% against a market at 52%, in a match that went three hours and two tiebreaks the other way.

Today the two lines disagree about the winner three times — Alexandrova v Tauson, Damm v Marozsán and Altmaier v Buse. That is the most flips this brief has carried on a single card, and in each case the argument is legible: a surface split the ranking hides, or a single enormous result the rating has not absorbed yet.

The top seed had a first-round bye and has not played in eight days; Tauson came through a three-set comeback on Monday. Their thirty-day loads are otherwise identical, and both figures are floors — several early-August results could not be verified. Tauson's Elo is the interesting row: she is 61st overall but 51st on hard court, one of the few players on this card whose rating improves on this surface.

Health & notes

⚠Alexandrova — collapsed with heat illness a month ago. On 28 July at the Memphis Classic she retired against a sixteen-year-old qualifier, trailing 6-7(2) 6-4 4-5 after more than three hours in around 97°F, and was taken off court in a wheelchair. No prognosis was published. She responded well — she beat Sabalenka in Toronto eleven days later — but she is now playing in Monterrey in late August, and that is worth stating even though tonight's match is after dark.

Tauson: no injury concerns found, though no dedicated injury source was reachable. She has won two consecutive three-set comebacks — from 4-1 down in the decider against Stearns in Cincinnati over 2h50, then from a set down against Zarazúa here on Monday in a hostile arena.

AssessmentThe tightest price on the card and the model disagrees by eleven points, flipping the favourite: Elo makes the top seed a 58% pick where the market has the unseeded Dane marginally ahead. The market is pricing form — Alexandrova is 1-3 in the month and 15-20 for the year, a long way from a No. 1 seed's season; Tauson has ground out two comebacks in ten days. Elo is pricing a career. His thirty-day figure is a floor — his Washington and Toronto qualifying results could not be resolved. Marozsán's Elo is 74th overall and 72nd on hard, an unusually flat profile; Damm's is 116th and 113th, equally flat. The gap between them is real and the market is ignoring it.

AssessmentDamm beat Daniil Medvedev 7-5 6-3 yesterday in 82 minutes — a wildcard ranked 92nd, and the first top-ten win of his career, which he called the best win of his life. The second seed is the underdog, and the surface row is why: Darderi is 30-30 lifetime on outdoor hard against 197-104 on clay, and his Elo falls from 36th overall to 82nd on hard. Van de Zandschulp needed 70 minutes yesterday to beat Vallejo 6-2 6-0 — the fastest win of the round — while Darderi went 2h20. His printed career splits read implausibly for his profile and should not be argued from.

⚠Chwalińska — an ankle injury at Wimbledon, and she says she needs matches. She was the 2026 Roland Garros runner-up, which is what put her at No. 22 and the third seed here. She then hurt her ankle at Wimbledon and lost in the first round, and lost her Toronto opener too; her win over Bucsa in Cincinnati on 15 August was her first since the Roland Garros final. In a WTA interview on 15 August she said recovery was 'definitely a process with some ups and downs' and, pointedly, 'I need matches, really. It's all about matches for me because I trained a lot, and I worked really hard.' She has played three in a month and arrives off a bye.

Parks: no injury concerns found, though no dedicated source was reachable. She was a semifinalist at this tournament in 2025 and reached a career high of 40; she is 89th now. She came from a set and 3-1 down to beat Marčinko in the first round.

AssessmentA seed who has said out loud that she needs match play, arriving off a bye, against a wildcard returning to the site of the best week of her career. Chwalińska's Roland Garros final is what earned the seeding and the ranking, but she has won two matches since it and her record on this surface — 43-26, against 175-74 on clay — is the thinnest part of her game. Market and model agree closely here, both making her a solid favourite; the case against is everything she has said about herself.

Kovacevic has played twice this week to Tsitsipas's once, and beat the eleventh seed 6-1 7-6(6) yesterday in 89 minutes. The season records look lopsided and the recent form does not: both are 3-2 and 2-1 across the month. Tsitsipas's Elo of 28th sits far above his ATP ranking of 49, because the model still rates a peak the ranking has written off.

Health & notes

Kovacevic: no 2026 injury concerns found. The year's record is poor but it contains a win over Karen Khachanov in Cincinnati, and he has now beaten a qualifier and the eleventh seed here.

⚠Tsitsipas — the back problem is 2025, not now. A back complaint forced him out of his Wimbledon opener last year and is the stated cause of the fall from No. 3 to outside the top 75. No current injury could be sourced: he has played Gstaad, Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati and now here with no retirement or reported medical timeout. He won Gstaad in July, a first title in sixteen months, and came through 6-4 7-6(6) against Brooksby on Monday, saving set points.

AssessmentThe widest price of the day, and the model makes it wider still — Elo gives Kovacevic 23% against the market's 28%. That is unusual: on most of this card the model is arguing the ranking overstates someone, and here it is arguing the opposite, because Tsitsipas's rating is built on beating better players than his current ranking implies he should. Kovacevic is the one man on the page with two wins this week and no seeding to defend.
