Two degrees warmer than yesterday and still no rain risk, so heat is again the only physical variable — and today it lands unevenly. Play starts at two in full sun on four courts at once, and the men carrying Saturday and Sunday qualifying in their legs are the ones drawing the early slots. The two second-round matches, involving the only seeds on the page, are not before 6:40 PM in cooling, near-still air.

Where the tournament stands

Arthur Fils won the Cincinnati title, beating Frances Tiafoe 6-3 1-6 6-0 in 1h28 — a first Masters 1000 for the 22-year-old, the first French champion at this level since Tsonga in 2014, and a tenth straight win from a deciding set this season. He hit 11 aces and rises to a career-high No. 11. Coco Gauff beat Jessica Pegula 6-2 6-4 for her second Cincinnati title and, remarkably, her first of 2026 after five losing finals; it was the first all-American women's final here since 1970. At Winston-Salem the first round produced one retirement — Pablo Carreño Busta, the 2016 champion, stopped at 4-6 0-3 against Adolfo Vallejo — and one long night, Mattia Bellucci needing 2h31 to end Martín Landaluce's perfect head-to-head record. Today completes that first round and starts the second. US Open qualifying also began today in New York and runs to the end of the week; it is outside this brief, which covers main draws only.

Arthur Fils won the Cincinnati title from a set down, 6-3 1-6 6-0, and is now 10-0 in deciding sets in 2026 — the first French Masters 1000 champion since Tsonga in 2014 and the youngest ever. Coco Gauff took her second Cincinnati title and her first of this year, having lost five finals. The all-American women's final was the first in Cincinnati since 1970.

The workload flag was the best guide on the day. Item 03 flagged Landaluce as the only man of the two to have won anything that month, and Bellucci beat him in 2h31; item 05 flagged Comesaña's clay record against a hard court and he won anyway. The clearest hit was item 04 — Brooksby needed exactly sixty minutes against a man who had played twice since 30 June.

The biggest call the page has made went wrong, and it barely counts. Elo gave Carreño Busta 79% against Vallejo where Vegas said 55% — the twenty-five-point gap this brief led with yesterday. Vallejo won. But he won because Carreño Busta retired at 4-6 0-3, and a retirement tests a fitness question, not a win-probability model. The honest reading is that the most interesting disagreement the page has printed was settled by something neither line was trying to predict.

The rest of the day was a straightforward win for the market: Vegas was closer on five of seven, including both Cincinnati finals. That is the expectation reasserting itself. A fourteen-day-old ratings file should lose to a live betting market over any real sample, and after a first day that suggested otherwise, it is now doing so.

Note the career table understates Hewitt badly: TennisExplorer files every one of his matches as hard court and shows dashes for clay and grass, which is demonstrably wrong for a player who reached the Wimbledon boys' final in July.

Health & notes

Gorzny: no injury history found. He won a Wimbledon boys' doubles title in 2022, then took the full college route through TCU and Texas before turning professional. At 782 he is the lowest-ranked man in the main draw, and he is in it because Balshaw beat him on Sunday.

Hewitt: no injury history found, but he is seventeen and his true match load is under-recorded. He was runner-up in the Wimbledon boys' singles in July, then qualified in Washington and beat Marcos Giron for a first ATP main-draw win — a top-100 scalp. His route through that qualifying was unusually kind: both opponents retired.

Cruz Hewitt is Lleyton's son, seventeen, here on a wildcard and sixteen days rested; Gorzny is 22, a college player turned professional, and is in the draw only because he lost on Sunday. The two 2026 rows tell opposite stories about the same man: Comesaña is 20-7 across all levels and 6-13 at tour level, which is the signature of a Challenger-heavy season. Altmaier has a bye and has not played since 16 August; Comesaña won here yesterday. Both are clay players by record — 248-159 and 268-145 respectively — and Comesaña's 26-38 on outdoor hard is the weakest surface record on the page.

Health & notes

Altmaier: he abandoned a second-round match at Eastbourne on 24 June at 6-3 3-2, the only physical flag found. He has played Wimbledon, Båstad, Kitzbühel, Montreal and Cincinnati since with no further stoppage, so it does not read as live.

Read the Elo row rather than the ranking. Choinski is 87th overall but 141st on hard court — a 142-point gap between his two ratings, the same shape that produced the widest disagreement this page has ever printed. His career table says the same thing: 325-199 on clay against 66-60 on outdoor hard. Rottgering qualified without losing a set, in 2h41 across two matches.

Choinski: no injuries found. He won the Bonn Challenger on 2 August without dropping a set in five matches, then lost a three-hour Cincinnati opener to Tirante and went out early in Québec. He is here as a replacement for Yannick Hanfmann.

Rottgering: no injuries found. He is nineteen, left-handed, and a Wake Forest student-athlete — which means he qualified for this ATP main draw on his own university's courts. He came through 6-1 6-0 and then 6-4 6-1 over the third seed.

AssessmentA home-campus story with a real tactical edge underneath it. Rottgering is a Wake Forest undergraduate who qualified on the courts he trains on, without losing a set, and he is left-handed against a man who has never seen him. Choinski has the ranking and a Challenger title inside the month, but his hard-court Elo sits 142 points below his overall rating and this is a hard court. He is unrated by Tennis Abstract, so there is no model line here either.

Tsitsipas has not played since 16 August; Brooksby beat one of the biggest servers on tour in exactly sixty minutes yesterday. The Elo row is the interesting one: Tsitsipas sits 28th on a rating built from who he has beaten, against an ATP ranking of 49 — the model has not finished marking down a former world No. 3, and rates him well above where the results now put him.

Brooksby: he is autistic and has written and spoken about it publicly, in first-person pieces for the ATP and USTA — part of his public identity by his own choice, and not a fitness note. Separately he had surgery on both wrists and returned from a long absence unranked; the ATP's own comeback feature describes him at his lowest as unable to hold a phone. The 2026 record reflects a player working back, not declining.

⚠Tsitsipas — the back problem is 2025, not now. A lingering back complaint forced him to retire from his Wimbledon opener last year and is the stated cause of a fall from No. 3 to outside the top 75. <b>No current back injury could be sourced.</b> Since Wimbledon he has played Gstaad — five matches in six days — plus Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati, with no retirement, walkover or reported medical timeout. He won Gstaad in July, a first title in sixteen months. He has publicly blamed coaching churn, racquet changes and anxiety for the slide; sources conflict on who is coaching him now.

The starkest freshness gap on the page. Suresh has played 4h07 across Saturday and Sunday — three sets each day — and lost the second of them; he is in the draw as a lucky loser. Giron has not played since roughly 12 August. Treat Suresh's career surface split with suspicion: a grass record of 25-3 for a player whose career ran through American college tennis is almost certainly misfiled hard courts.

Suresh: no 2026 injuries found. He is 6'5", from Madurai, and reached the tour through NAIA tennis at Georgia Gwinnett and then Wake Forest — so, like Rottgering in item 03, he is an alumnus playing on his old university's courts. In February he won all three rubbers as India beat the Netherlands in a Davis Cup qualifier, including a straight-sets win over the world No. 88.

Giron: no 2026 injury, withdrawal or medical timeout found. His double hip surgery is nearly a decade old and the ATP calls it a distant memory. He is the oldest man on the page and on his best surface at 329-205 on outdoor hard — but he has one win in his last four, and his most recent ATP main-draw match was losing to seventeen-year-old Cruz Hewitt, who plays item 01 today.

AssessmentThe widest price on the card and the one where the freshness argument is strongest against it. Suresh has three-set matches in his legs from both Saturday and Sunday and is here only because he lost; Giron has been idle twelve days. Against that, Giron has won one of his last four and was beaten in Washington by a seventeen-year-old.
