Vol. I · No. 8Sunday, 23 August 2026Cincinnati finals · Winston-Salem R1
The Cincinnati finals plus the opening day at Winston-Salem — eight matches, one cut for lopsided odds. The two probability lines now carry their names, Vegas and Elo, and on item 01 they disagree by twenty-five points.
Conditions
Cincinnati OpenMason, OH
Sunny, high near 76°F (24°C). Light north-west wind increasing to 5–10 mph in the morning. Mostly clear at night, low around 55°F (13°C), wind dropping to calm. No chance of precipitation listed for either the day or the night.
After two days of interruptions — a 45-minute delay in the men's semifinal and another in the women's — the National Weather Service has nothing at all in the forecast today. It is also unusually cool for late August: the men's final at 4:30 will be played near the day's peak of 76°F, and by the time the women's final starts it will be clear and falling through the low sixties. Cool, dry, still air is slow air, which tends to favour the better mover over the bigger hitter.
Winston-Salem OpenWinston-Salem, NC
Sunny, high near 86°F (30°C). North-west wind 3–8 mph. Clear overnight, low around 61°F (16°C), wind becoming light and variable. No precipitation listed. Dewpoint 66°F before dawn, expected to mix out through a sunny afternoon.
Ten degrees warmer than Ohio and no rain risk either, so heat is the only physical variable. First round starts at three in the hottest part of the day and in full sun; the last matches will finish in calm air in the upper sixties. For a first round played by men who mostly arrived from qualifying or an early Cincinnati exit, the afternoon slots are meaningfully harder work than the evening ones.
Where the tournament stands
Saturday delivered two upsets and two formalities. Jessica Pegula ended Iga Świątek's title defence and her ten-match winning streak, 7-5 4-6 6-4 in 2h47 from 1-3 down in the decider — her 300th career tour-level win and her 33rd over a top-ten opponent. Frances Tiafoe, a fortnight past surgery on his right hand, broke Brandon Nakashima five times to win 7-5 6-3 in 1h41; Nakashima was making his top-twenty debut and had beaten Medvedev and Fritz to get there. Arthur Fils needed 67 minutes to beat Flavio Cobolli and reach his first Masters 1000 final, and Coco Gauff ended Sara Bejlek's run 6-4 6-1. Today's finals are the first all-American women's final in Cincinnati since 1970 and the first Masters 1000 final contested by two Black players. Meanwhile the Winston-Salem Open opens its first round in North Carolina, the last tour-level event before the US Open, with twelve withdrawals from the original entry list and three alternates in the draw.
Yesterday's brief, scored
Four semifinals, all played. The favourite won two — and the two upsets were the two the model had flagged.

The fifteen-point disagreement resolved in Elo's favour, and it was the biggest call the page had made. The market gave Świątek 68% on a Toronto title and a 10-0 month; Elo, blind to all of it, called the match 47-53 and very nearly even. Pegula won it 7-5 4-6 6-4 in 2h47, from 1-3 down in the deciding set, ending both the streak and the title defence. The reasoning printed here was that the gap existed because Elo could not see Świątek's form — and the gap was right anyway. That is not the same as the reasoning being right.
Workload was the better guide on the men's side. Nakashima was carried on thirteen matches and thirty-two sets in thirty days, three of the last four going the distance, against a Tiafoe on seven. Tiafoe won 7-5 6-3 in 1h41 with five breaks of serve — a fortnight after hand surgery. The tired man had beaten Medvedev and Fritz to get there and had nothing left.
Five days, one pattern. Selected matches have now gone to the favourite 14 times in 30 — still under half. The excluded matches stand at 10 in 12.
Elo v Vegas, day two
Two lines on every card: the Vegas figure implied by betting odds, and the Elo figure predicted from ratings. Yesterday Elo was closer on 3 of four. Across its first two days it stands at 7 of 8.

Percentages are for the first-named player; "closer" means the smaller error against the result. The two the model got right were the two big disagreements — Pegula and, less dramatically, Tiafoe. On the two where the lines already agreed, they were both wrong together on nothing and right together on Fils and Gauff.
Seven of eight still is not evidence. Eight matches is a coin landing the same way three times; a thirteen-day-old ratings file should not beat a live betting market, and the expectation remains that it will not over any real sample. What today offers is an unusually clean test. On four of the eight cards the two lines agree to within two points. On one — Carreño Busta v Vallejo — they are twenty-five points apart, the widest this page has printed, because Vallejo's clay-built rating says one thing and his hard-court fortnight in Cincinnati says another. And on one, Hijikata v Blanch, Elo declines to answer at all.

Both arrive rested — Carreño Busta has not played in a week, Vallejo in five days. The career split is where this match actually lives: Vallejo is 142-89 on clay against 35-26 on hard, and Carreño Busta, for all that he is remembered as a clay-courter, is 214-113 on outdoor hard. Vallejo's 41-19 is the best 2026 record of the twelve men in Winston-Salem today.
Health & notes
⚠Carreño Busta — rebuilt after elbow surgery, and playing like it. He had elbow and arm surgery in 2023 after what he called a nightmare season, and publicly blamed the tour's ball changes for prolonging the recovery. The damage is visible in his year rows: 2-5 in 2023, 10-12 in 2024. He now says he is at 100% and can play without arm pain, and 2026 is the evidence — 28-18, a Challenger title in Murcia, a French Open fourth round, and a win over Machac in Cincinnati last week.
Vallejo: no injury concerns found. In March he became only the third Paraguayan to reach the ATP top 100, after Víctor Pecci and Ramón Delgado, and he reached his first tour-level semifinal at Båstad last month. He beat Jacquet and Vacherot in Cincinnati before taking a set off Tommy Paul.
AssessmentThe tightest match of the day, and the widest gap between market and model the brief has ever printed — twenty-five points. Elo has Carreño Busta at 79% because Vallejo's hard-court rating sits around two hundredth on tour, a clay-built profile carrying an overall number his hard-court results do not support. The market has it at 55-45, because the market watched him beat Vacherot and take a set off Tommy Paul on a hard court nine days ago. One of them is reading a stale file; the other is reading last week.

Thirty sets in thirty days against twenty. Pegula has played twelve matches in a month — a Washington final, a Toronto week and six rounds here — and needed 2h47 to beat Świątek yesterday, from 1-3 down in the third. Gauff has played nine, took 71 minutes over Kostyuk and 76 over Bejlek, and her month includes a walkover. Both have won five straight.
Health & notes
⚠Pegula — a medical timeout on Thursday, and 2h47 on Saturday. She took a medical timeout during the quarterfinal against Anisimova for a serving-related issue and recovered well, then played the longest match of anyone's week to end Świątek's title defence. It was her 300th career tour-level win and her 33rd over a top-10 opponent. She has not had a week off since 2 August.
Gauff: no injury concerns found, and the shorter road here by some distance — she has spent four hours less on court than Pegula over the past month. She is chasing a first title of 2026 having lost five finals, and won this tournament in 2023.
AssessmentThe first all-American women's final in Cincinnati since 1970, between two players whose hard-court Elo ratings are four-tenths of a point apart — as close to identical as the model gets. The market makes Gauff the favourite on freshness and on winning their most recent meeting; Elo, which cannot see that Pegula has played four hours more tennis this month, calls it exactly even and technically makes her the marginal pick. Pegula has never won a WTA 1000 title. Gauff has lost five finals this year.

Four meetings, four Landaluce wins, on three different surfaces. Worth knowing: one published table has all four credited to Bellucci — the same matches, the same scores, the winners inverted — and a widely-quoted “1-0” figure is a tour-level-only count, since Rome is the only one of the four on the main tour. Each winner above was verified separately, three of them against ATP match reports.

The wildcard is ranked twenty-one places above the man who got in on merit. Landaluce has played five matches this month to Bellucci's three and is the only one of the two to have won any of them — he beat Draper and Arnaldi in Cincinnati before losing to Tirante in two tiebreaks. Bellucci has a genuine six-week gap between late June and 4 August; he was not on the Washington entry list, so it is an absence rather than a hole in the data.
Health & notes
Landaluce: no injury concerns found. In May he went from lucky loser to Rome quarterfinalist, beating Čilić, Bellucci and Medjedović before Medvedev needed four match points to stop him. He beat Jack Draper in Cincinnati ten days ago.
Bellucci: no injury concerns found. One widely-shared clip of him retiring against Hugo Gaston in Toronto dates from August 2025, not this year, and should not be carried forward.
AssessmentLandaluce has beaten Bellucci four times out of four, on hard, on grass and on clay, and the most recent was a Masters 1000 third round in May. The market has him at 58%. Elo has him at 46% and makes Bellucci the favourite — a flip driven by ratings that give Bellucci a nineteen-place edge on hard court and know nothing about a head-to-head that is currently perfect. When a model and a market disagree about who is favourite, the head-to-head is usually the thing the model cannot see.

Neither has played in over a week, and Mpetshi Perricard has played twice since 30 June. Brooksby is 119-74 on outdoor hard against Mpetshi Perricard's 60-49, and this is the surface where the Frenchman's serve should count for most — his 246 km/h at Wimbledon says the weapon is intact even as the results have collapsed.
Health & notes
⚠Mpetshi Perricard — from 29 in the world to 92, and no explanation on the record. He is 0-2 in the last month, lost in Cincinnati qualifying, and has played two matches since 30 June. French coverage of his Wimbledon first-round exit noted he had then gone five consecutive Grand Slams without a win. He appointed Greg Rusedski to his team for this season. No injury has been reported that would account for the July gap — past wrist and eye problems both predate this window, and it would be inventing a cause to link them.
Brooksby: the longest injury history in this draw — surgery on both wrists and sixteen weeks in casts, with TennisExplorer showing no matches at all in 2020 or 2024. He returned in 2025 and won his first ATP title, but 2026 has been hard going at 11-20. Nothing current.
AssessmentTwo men whose rankings badly understate what they can do and badly overstate what they have been doing. Brooksby is 11-20 for the year; Mpetshi Perricard has won no matches in a month and arrives having lost in qualifying at the event down the road. Market and model agree to within a point here, which is what usually happens when neither has any recent form for either of them to argue about.

The surface split does the work here. Comesaña is 26-42 on outdoor hard against 280-157 on clay — the most extreme specialist on the page, and this is the wrong surface for him. Wu is 109-63 on hard. Both are lightly raced, two matches each in a month.
Health & notes
⚠Wu — withdrew from a Challenger this week and is here as an alternate. He pulled out of the Cancún Challenger, which is running now, and took the Winston-Salem alternate spot instead. No source gives a reason, so this is a flag rather than a diagnosis. His career has been repeatedly interrupted — a complete blank in 2020 and 2021, 9-5 in 2024 — and he rebuilt through the Challenger circuit, winning Sarasota in April. He was the first Chinese man in the Open Era to win an ATP title.
Comesaña: no injury concerns found. He beat Rublev at Wimbledon in 2024 as a qualifier on debut, but he is 0-2 in the last month and his hard-court record is the thinnest part of his game.
AssessmentA clay specialist on a hard court against a former ATP champion who withdrew from a Challenger three days ago to be here. Comesaña's 26-42 on this surface is the number that decides how you read the price, and both the market and Elo land within two points of each other on it — which is unusual agreement for two players this lightly raced.

Hijikata is 223-124 on outdoor hard, one of the two purest hard-court records in the Winston-Salem field. Blanch, at eighteen, already has 103 career wins and has played 45 matches this season — a heavy Challenger schedule rather than an inactive one, which is worth saying because his ranking of 224 implies the opposite.
Health & notes
Hijikata: no injury concerns found. He got into this draw as an alternate and arrives off beating Monfils and Darderi in Cincinnati last week before losing to Menšík.
Blanch: no injury concerns found, but he has lost his last three and has not won a match in a month. He beat Struff in Miami this year. He is the youngest of three professional brothers — Ulises and Dali also play — and one of two left-handers in the Winston-Salem field.
AssessmentThe one match on the page where the model has nothing to say: Blanch is not rated by Tennis Abstract at all, which is what happens to an eighteen-year-old below the match threshold at the levels it counts. The market has him at 36%, which is generous for a man on a three-match losing streak against an opponent with 223 hard-court wins — and is presumably pricing the wildcard's upside rather than his month.

Tiafoe has played five matches this week to Fils's four, but Fils has the heavier month — twenty-two sets to seventeen — because he went to the Montreal quarterfinals and Tiafoe's Montreal ended in a retirement. Fils is seventh in the world on hard-court Elo and Tiafoe twentieth, the biggest ratings gap of the two finals.
Health & notes
⚠Tiafoe — a fortnight from hand surgery, and five wins since. He retired from his Montreal third round on 6 August and had surgery around the 8th to remove a cyst on his right hand; coverage at the time doubted he would play here at all. He has since beaten Sonego, Tien, Auger-Aliassime, Musetti and Nakashima, dropping two sets in five matches, with no medical timeout reported in any of them.
⚠Fils — a hip flare-up last month, on a long injury record. He called the physio during his Washington loss on 28 July and was described as less and less mobile. The underlying history is a lower-back stress fracture sustained at Roland Garros that cost him roughly eight months, with hip trouble during the rehabilitation; sources conflict on which was primary. Nothing visible since, and he took 67 minutes over Cobolli yesterday.
AssessmentThe first Masters 1000 final contested by two Black players, and a meeting of two comeback stories running in opposite directions. Tiafoe is two weeks past hand surgery and has beaten the second seed, Musetti and Nakashima to get here. Fils lost eight months to a stress fracture and is into his first Masters final at twenty-two, having dropped one set in five rounds. Market and model agree to within a point — both make Fils a clear favourite, and the ratings gap between them is the widest of the two finals.

Kecmanović 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(3) — 2026 Dallas R32 Indoor hard
One meeting, in February, and it went to a deciding tiebreak. Verified three ways — both players' logs, a second head-to-head source, and draw progression, since Kecmanović played the next round and Shimabukuro's Dallas ended there.

Neither has played in over a week, but the months look nothing alike. Shimabukuro has played six matches to Kecmanović's two, most of them in qualifying — he came through Montreal qualifying, lost in Cincinnati qualifying and got into that main draw as a lucky loser anyway. Kecmanović skipped Montreal entirely and has played twice since mid-July. Read the career split against the price: Shimabukuro is 234-141 on outdoor hard, the purest hard-court record in the Winston-Salem field, against Kecmanović's 151-122.
Health & notes
Kecmanović: no injury concerns found. A former world No. 27, now 66th and 20-22 for the year. He beat Ugo Carabelli in Cincinnati and took a set off Cobolli, who went on to reach the semifinals.
Shimabukuro: no injury concerns found. He is here as an alternate. One report says he entered this week at a career-high No. 87; his profile says 94 with a career high of 89, and that could not be adjudicated without the ATP's rankings page, which is unreachable.
AssessmentThe widest price on the page, and both lines agree on it to within a point and a half — 68% against 66%. The argument for the underdog is entirely in the career table: Shimabukuro has 234 outdoor hard-court wins to Kecmanović's 151, and their one previous meeting went to a deciding tiebreak in February. The argument against is that six of his last matches were qualifying, and he lost the last two of them.

Odds too lopsided — Hewitt longer than +300. Winston-Salem first round; Hewitt, an 18-year-old wildcard ranked 376, is the son of Lleyton Hewitt.
Cut by the odds filter, not for missing data. Five further Winston-Salem first-round matches — Sonego v Kopřiva, Majchrzak v Bonzi, Safiullin v Fucsovics, Walton v de Jong and Royer v Giron — appear on several betting sites as today's play but are scheduled for Monday, and are not counted here.
