Vol. I · No. 7Saturday, 22 August 2026Cincinnati · Semifinals

All four semifinals, from lunchtime to the night cap. Yesterday the favourite won just one of four — and the Elo line that debuted here was closer than the market on three of them. Today the two disagree by fifteen points on Pegula v Świątek.

Conditions

Cincinnati OpenMason, OH
Partly sunny, high 80°F (27°C), with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly before 5 PM. West wind around 11 mph. Mostly clear after dark, falling toward 59°F (15°C), north-west wind 5–10 mph. Dewpoint 66°F at one o'clock.
The card splits cleanly in two. The afternoon carries a real interruption risk, front-loaded before five; the two evening matches should be dry and cooling. A twenty-degree drop between the first ball and the last is the widest spread of conditions the brief has covered in a single day — and the muggy 66°F dewpoint matters more for the afternoon than the fairly mild air temperature does.

Where the tournament stands

Friday's quarterfinals went almost entirely against the favourites. Brandon Nakashima lost a thirteen-minute first-set tiebreak 11-9 to a Taylor Fritz serving 22 aces, then won 7-6(9) 4-6 6-3 in 2h13 — a second straight Masters semifinal, and the first player outside the top twenty to reach both the Montreal and Cincinnati last four since 1990. Frances Tiafoe needed four match points, having been broken serving for it, to beat Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(2) 7-5; the two Americans meet today in Cincinnati's first all-American men's semifinal since 2010. Sara Bejlek continued the run of the tournament, beating Madison Keys 3-6 6-4 7-6(5) from 4-2 down in the deciding tiebreak — a third Grand Slam champion in a week, after Krejčíková and Sabalenka. Only Coco Gauff obliged the market, taking 71 minutes over Marta Kostyuk, who served eight double faults to Gauff's one. All four semifinals are today on P&G Stadium Court; the finals are tomorrow from 2 PM ET.

Yesterday's brief, scored

Four items, all played. The favourite won one — the worst day for the market since the brief began, on a card of quarterfinals.

MatchMarketResult
01Musetti v Tiafoe53 / 47Tiafoe 7-6(2) 7-5 — on a fourth match point underdog
02Gauff v Kostyuk55 / 45Gauff 6-2 6-2, in 71 minutes favourite
03Fritz v Nakashima63 / 37Nakashima 7-6(9) 4-6 6-3 — 2h13 underdog
04Bejlek v Keys34 / 66Bejlek 3-6 6-4 7-6(5) — from 4-2 down in the breaker underdog

Every workload flag pointed the right way, and the tired man won anyway. Nakashima was flagged here on thirteen matches and thirty-two sets in thirty days, the heaviest load the brief has recorded, against a Fritz who had not played a third set since 3 August. He lost a thirteen-minute first-set tiebreak 11-9 to a man serving 22 aces, and won in three. Bejlek was flagged for a post-midnight finish and the shortest turnaround in the draw, and beat Keys from a set down. Fresh legs remain an edge, not a rule — and this was the day the rule broke hardest.

Tiafoe, two weeks after hand surgery, needed four match points to close out Musetti, having been broken serving for it. That flag was carried as a risk; it read as a reason he might lose rather than a reason he would win.

Four days, one pattern. The selected matches have now gone to the favourite 12 times in 26 — still under half, on cards chosen for being hard to call. The excluded matches stand at 10 in 12.

Elo's first day, scored

The rating debuted yesterday. Set against the market on the same four matches, it was closer to the truth on 3 of them — including the one where it disagreed about who was favourite.

MatchMarketEloWon
Musetti v Tiafoe52.643.7TiafoeElo closer
Gauff v Kostyuk54.860.3GauffElo closer
Fritz v Nakashima62.553.4NakashimaElo closer
Bejlek v Keys34.030.6Bejlekmarket closer

Percentages are for the first-named player; "closer" means the smaller error against the actual result. The headline is item 01: the market made Musetti a 52.6% favourite, Elo made him a 43.7% underdog, and Tiafoe won. On item 03 both had Fritz ahead, but Elo had him at 53% where the market had 63%, so it lost by less. Only Bejlek v Keys went the market's way, and only because Elo was even more confident in Keys than the books were.

Four matches is not evidence. A twelve-day-old rating file beating a live betting market three times in one day is the sort of result that reverses itself in a week, and the honest expectation is that the market wins over any decent sample — it prices injury, fatigue and last night's tennis, and Elo prices none of them. The reason to keep both on the page is not that one is better. It is that when they disagree, the disagreement usually has a name. Today it has two: Pegula v Świątek, fifteen points apart because the file predates a Toronto title, and Bejlek v Gauff, eight points apart because it predates her entire week.

Nine meetings and Nakashima has won one, in Tokyo two years ago. Three sources agree on the 7-1 aggregate and on Tokyo being his only win, so the five meetings from 2020 to 2022 are attributed by deduction rather than from individual match reports — the arithmetic is certain, the individual lines less so. This is the first all-American men's semifinal in Cincinnati since 2010.

Thirty-two sets in thirty days against fifteen, and the true gap is wider — four of Nakashima's Washington and Montreal scores could not be verified, so 32 is a floor and the figure may be 36. He has played thirteen matches to Tiafoe's seven, seven of them three-setters, and his last three here all went the distance. Note both career pages are stale at source and understate them: Nakashima's is missing the entire Montreal final run, so treat his career line as a floor too.

Health & notes

Nakashima — thirteen matches in thirty days, and he has said so out loud. No injury, but he described himself as 'battling myself out there' against Fritz and spoke of managing fatigue: 'Last week in Montreal, it was all pretty new to me… now I just try to take it day by day.' He lost the Montreal final on 13 August and has since played four matches here, three of them in three sets, including 2h51 against Medvedev from three match points down and 2h13 to beat Fritz. He is the first player outside the top twenty to reach both the Montreal and Cincinnati semifinals since 1990.
Tiafoe — two weeks from hand surgery. He retired from his Montreal third round on 6 August at 6-2 2-0, then had surgery around the 8th to remove a cyst on his right hand. Coverage at the time openly doubted whether he would play here at all, and questioned the US Open; he said only 'I'll be back soon.' He has since won four matches, dropping one set, including the second seed and Musetti. No medical timeout has been reported in any of them.
AssessmentA coin flip on paper and a rout in the record book: Tiafoe has won seven of their nine meetings, five of them on outdoor hard. But that record is mostly 2020 to 2022, and the two men arriving today are not the two who set it. Nakashima has played thirteen matches in a month and beaten Medvedev and Fritz inside four days; Tiafoe has played seven and is two weeks past surgery on his hand. The market splits down the middle and cannot agree which of them is favourite. Neither can Elo, which has them six-tenths of a point apart — the closest agreement between model and market the brief has recorded.

Their thirteenth meeting. Six of the twelve played are listed; on hard courts the record is Świątek 5-4. That figure is worth stating carefully, because the WTA's own semifinal preview says the opposite — 'Pegula leads 4-1 on hard courts' — which cannot be reconciled with the undisputed 7-5 overall or with the meeting list. Two widely-published H2H tables also had Rome 2026 and Miami 2022 credited to the wrong player; both were corrected against match reports before this table was built.

The workload table understates how lopsided this is. Pegula has played eleven matches and twenty-seven sets in thirty days — a Washington final, a Toronto week and four rounds here, three of the last four from a set down or a final-set tiebreak. Świątek has the lightest week of the eight: her quarterfinal lasted five games before Rybakina retired, so she reached the semifinal on seven sets and has had two days off. Pegula played the longest women's match of Thursday and is on one.

Health & notes

Pegula — a medical timeout in the quarterfinal, and she has named the problem herself. She took a medical timeout during Thursday's win over Anisimova for a serving-related issue and 'recovered well', per the WTA. Separately she has been open about the schedule, calling the Washington-to-Toronto turnaround 'pretty exhausting'. She reached the Washington final on 2 August and has not had a week off since.
Świątek: no injury concerns found, and the freshest legs in the women's draw. She won Toronto on 14 August, is 10-0 over the past month, and is the defending champion here — no woman has retained this title since Serena Williams in 2015.
AssessmentThe widest disagreement between market and model the brief has recorded — fifteen points. The market has Świątek at 68% on a nine-match winning streak, a Toronto title and a quarterfinal that cost her five games; Elo, which was last rebuilt before any of that happened, calls it 47-53 and very nearly a coin flip. This is the clearest case yet of the gap being explained by what Elo cannot see rather than by the market being wrong. Pegula leads their most recent hard-court meeting and won the last final they contested; she also arrives on twenty-seven sets in a month against Świątek's twenty-one, seven of which came this week.

Cobolli has the lightest thirty-day load in the men's draw — five matches — because he lost his Montreal opener, and he has the extra day's rest as well, having finished his quarterfinal on Thursday. The counterweight is the surface: he is 162-102 on clay against 74-49 on outdoor hard, and his Elo splits the same way, thirty-second on hard against twenty-third overall. Fils is the reverse, seventh on hard.

Health & notes

Cobolli: no injury concerns found. He is the 2026 Roland Garros finalist and beat Tiafoe to win Acapulco; the Montreal first-round loss to Hanfmann on 4 August now looks like the anomaly of his summer.
Fils — a hip flare-up last month, on top of a longer history. He called the physio for a hip problem during his Washington loss on 28 July and was described as 'less and less mobile on court'. The tournament's own feature puts the underlying injury as a lower-back stress fracture sustained at Roland Garros that cost him about eight months, with hip trouble during rehabilitation — sources conflict on which was primary and in which year, and that could not be reconciled. What is solid: a flare-up twenty-five days ago, and nothing visible since. He is quarterfinal-or-better in eight of thirteen events this season.
AssessmentMarket and model agree almost exactly here — four-tenths of a point apart, the closest of the four — and both make Fils a heavy favourite. The case against is rest and form: Cobolli has played five matches in a month to Fils's nine and finished a day earlier, and he has beaten Paul and Jodar from a set down this week. The case for is everything else. Fils has lost twice in a month, both times to the same man, and he took sixty-four minutes to remove the world No. 5 in the last round. Cobolli's record says clay-courter; today is not clay.

Near-identical months — eight matches each — but assembled very differently. Gauff's includes a walkover, Bencic having withdrawn from their Toronto quarterfinal, which counts as zero matches and zero sets. Bejlek's includes five straight wins here as an unseeded player without a first-round bye. Read the career split too: Bejlek is 139-60 on clay against 43-26 on outdoor hard, and that hard figure is stale at source — it omits this entire week.

Health & notes

Bejlek: no injury or fatigue information could be found at all, which is a gap rather than a clean bill. She is twenty, five foot three, and has played five matches in nine days.
Gauff: no injury concerns found. She has dropped two sets across her last two tournaments and needed 71 minutes to beat Kostyuk on Friday. She is chasing a first title of 2026 having lost five finals.
AssessmentThe run of the tournament against the most in-form player left in it. Bejlek has beaten Pliskova, Krejčíková, Alexandrova, Sabalenka and Keys in nine days — three Grand Slam champions and the world No. 1 — from a set down twice and a tiebreak down twice. Gauff has lost one match in her last twelve and took 71 minutes over the last round. The interesting number is the disagreement: the market gives Bejlek 25%, Elo gives her 16%, and the entire eight-point gap is the market pricing a week that the ratings file, built on 10 August, has never heard of.
Also on the schedule
All four semifinals cleared the odds filter and all four are shown, so nothing was excluded and nothing was dropped for space. Gauff v Bejlek was the closest call the filter has faced — see the selection note below. No tour-level qualifying; the finals are tomorrow from 2 PM ET.
