Vol. I · No. 6Friday, 21 August 2026Cincinnati · Quarterfinals
Four quarterfinals, and for a second day nothing was excluded. New from today: an Elo rating on every card, set against the market line — and on the tightest match of the four, the two disagree about which man is favourite.
Conditions
Cincinnati OpenMason, OH
Areas of fog before 9 AM, then mostly sunny. High 81°F (27°C), easing to 68°F by late evening. Rain chance 0–3% across both sessions. Wind north-east then north at 1–3 mph. Humidity climbs from 67% at 5 PM to 92% by 11 PM.
The first clean day of the week. Wednesday lost ninety minutes to rain and pushed two matches past midnight; Thursday carried a 60% afternoon chance. Today the National Weather Service lists no hazard of any kind. Near-calm air and very high humidity late will make the night session heavy and slow.
Where the tournament stands
Thursday's half of the quarterfinals was the steadiest session of a week full of upsets, and it still lost a match to injury. Elena Rybakina retired trailing Iga Świątek 4-1, having turned her left ankle serving at 40-15 in the fourth game. Flavio Cobolli came from a set down to beat Tommy Paul 2-6 6-3 6-4 and reach the first Masters 1000 semifinal of his career; Arthur Fils took sixty-four minutes to end Thiago Agustín Tirante's run, which had already accounted for Djokovic and Menšík; and Jessica Pegula beat Amanda Anisimova by 95 points to 94 across 2h14. The result still shaping the women's draw came the night before, when Sara Bejlek, ranked 35th, beat world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(7) 6-4 — saving the opening set from 5-1 down in the tiebreak — for her first top-10 win. Today completes the last eight: four quarterfinals, all on P&G Stadium Court, running from early afternoon to the night cap.

The health flag earned its place, and got the reason wrong. Elena Rybakina was carried yesterday on her own words from the Toronto final — "I'm not sure what is not hurting", "I feel kind of destroyed" — read here as accumulated fatigue rather than injury, since she had won three straight-sets matches with no medical timeout. She retired trailing 4-1, having hurt her left ankle serving at 40-15 in the fourth game. The flag was right that she was the risk and wrong about what the risk was.
Flavio Cobolli was the one upset, from a set down, and is into the first Masters 1000 semifinal of his career — a day after spending 2h31 beating Rafael Jodar. At the other end of the card, Arthur Fils, described here as the freshest man in the last eight, needed sixty-four minutes.
Three days, one pattern. Across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the selected matches have gone to the favourite 11 times in 22 — exactly half, on cards chosen for being hard to call.
And a miss worth owning. Wednesday's edition was compiled before that night's order of play was published, and it left out Sabalenka v Bejlek altogether. At 1.17 / 5.50 the match would have been excluded as lopsided — and Bejlek won it 7-6(7) 6-4, saving the first set from 5-1 down in the tiebreak. That is the first time the odds filter would have cut a real upset rather than a formality. The excluded-match record is therefore 10 in 12, not the 10 in 11 reported yesterday.
New today: a rating on every card
Tennis has no equivalent of a quarterback rating, a PER or a WAR — no single official number saying how good a player is right now. The nearest thing is Elo, the system built for chess and adapted for tennis by Tennis Abstract. Every match moves both players' ratings, by a lot when the loser was highly rated and by very little when they were not, so a rating is a running summary of who you have beaten rather than how far you got.
Two ratings convert straight into a win probability, which is what makes this worth adding: the model line can be set against the market line and the two compared. From today every card carries both, using the surface-specific rating — Tennis Abstract publishes separate hard, clay and grass numbers, and this is a hard court. The caret above each probability bar marks where Elo puts the match.
The caveat, stated plainly. The ratings file is rebuilt weekly and the current one is dated 10 August 2026, eleven days ago. It contains no Cincinnati results at all. That matters most for Sara Bejlek, whose 1782 was set before she beat the world No. 1 — the figure on her card understates her by whatever that win is worth. Where the market and Elo disagree today, part of the gap is simply the market knowing about this week.

Two of the lighter loads in the men's draw, and Tiafoe has played six matches in thirty days — fewer than anyone else left in either singles draw. The career split is what to read here: Musetti is 152-78 on clay against 79-62 on outdoor hard, and this is a hard court.
Health & notes
⚠Musetti — a season built around not breaking down. Withdrawals from Acapulco, Miami and Queen's, and he missed Wimbledon entirely, returning at Washington on 27 July. His own explanation: 'playing many matches last year was something that harmed my body… injuries have been the result of all the accumulated stress.' No current concern, and no set dropped this week — but 17-9 is a thin year's work for a top-15 player, and that is deliberate.
⚠Tiafoe — retired with a hand and wrist problem on 6 August. He told his box 'I'm hurting' and pulled out at 2-6 0-2 against Rinderknech in Montreal, who reported 'he told me it was his wrist, his arm, his elbow.' Tiafoe then posted that he had 'been dealing with a right-hand injury for a little bit now… I tried to play, but need the rest,' and withdrew from the doubles. Two weeks on he has played three clean matches here with no medical timeout, including a straight-sets win over the second seed.
AssessmentThe tightest match on the card, and the only one all day where the model and the market pick different men. Their eight meetings have split four apiece and split by surface too — Musetti's on clay, Tiafoe's on hard, this tournament included. Musetti has not dropped a set all week and has lost to nobody but Rafael Jodar since July. Tiafoe has beaten the second seed, has played less tennis than anyone left, and retired from his last match before Cincinnati holding his wrist.

Kostyuk has the heavier week — eight sets to seven — and two of her three matches here went to a deciding set, including a 4-6 6-0 6-2 over the fifth seed in which she took twelve of the last fourteen games. Gauff's thirty-day figure is flattered by a walkover: Bencic withdrew from their Toronto quarterfinal with a hip injury, which counts as zero matches and zero sets.
Health & notes
Gauff: no injury concerns found. She skipped Washington on purpose — 'that's why I didn't play D.C., I wanted to just have a real training block' — and criticised the congested calendar while doing it.
Kostyuk: no injury concerns found. She also skipped Washington after Wimbledon, and her round of 16 finished before Wednesday's rain, the cleanest schedule of the four women.
AssessmentKostyuk is having the best season of her career: a first WTA 1000 title, a Wimbledon semifinal, a career-high ranking, and on Wednesday an eighth top-10 win of the year, which ties the tour lead. She also won the last time these two played. Against that, she has spent more time on court this week than Gauff, who skipped Washington to train and needed ninety-three minutes in the last round. This is the one match today where Elo likes the favourite more than the market does.

Thirty-two sets in thirty days against twenty — the widest workload gap the brief has recorded between two players in the same match. Nakashima reached the Montreal final on 13 August and was back on court here on the 16th. Fritz has not played a third set since 3 August.
Health & notes
Fritz: no injury concerns found. He won the Washington title on 3 August, his first of 2026 after losing finals in Dallas, Halle and Tokyo, and has not been taken to a deciding set since.
⚠Nakashima — thirteen matches in thirty days, three of the last four the distance. No injury reported, and he frames it as momentum: 'I'm just trying to make sure my body is staying healthy and keep riding the wave.' But he lost the Montreal final on 13 August, played here three days later, then needed 2h51 to beat Medvedev from three match points down and a third set to get past Borges. He is at a career-high No. 22.
AssessmentThe widest disagreement of the day between the market and the model, sitting on top of the widest workload gap the brief has recorded. Nakashima has played thirteen matches and thirty-two sets in a month — a Masters final, then straight into this, then two hours fifty-one against Medvedev having been three match points from going home. Fritz has played nine, has dropped no sets since the 3rd, and beat this same opponent in the Washington semifinal nineteen days ago. The market calls that 62-38. Elo, which has no idea how tired anyone is, calls it 53-47.

Identical weeks — three matches, seven sets each — but Bejlek's includes a first round Keys never had to play, and hers is the only week here containing a match that finished after midnight. Read the career split too: Bejlek is 139-60 on clay against 43-26 on outdoor hard, the profile of a clay-court player having a hard-court fortnight. Keys is 271-149 on outdoor hard.
Health & notes
⚠Bejlek — a post-midnight finish and the shortest turnaround in the draw. Her round of 16 against Sabalenka began around 10:15 PM ET on a day already broken by ninety minutes of rain, and ran past midnight. No injury and no medical timeout — but she is the only quarterfinalist who did not have a first-round bye, so she has played four matches here to everyone else's three, and had the least recovery before today.
Keys: no injury concerns found. She won this title in 2019. She lost her opening match in Washington and her third round in Toronto, so she arrived here comparatively fresh.
AssessmentBejlek beat the world No. 1 on Wednesday night, saving the first set from 5-1 down in the tiebreak and finishing after midnight. It was her first top-10 win, in her fourth match of a tournament where everyone else has played three. Keys won this title in 2019 and has dropped one set in three rounds. The rating gap below is the widest on the card — but that file was built on 10 August, before Bejlek had beaten anybody, so treat it as the most stale number on the page.
Also on the schedule
All four quarterfinals cleared the odds filter, so nothing was excluded and nothing was dropped for space — the shortest possible list. No tour-level qualifying: Cincinnati's qualifying draws finished on 12 August.
