Where the tournament stands
Rain took ninety minutes out of Wednesday and pushed two matches past midnight, and the seeds kept falling. Tommy Paul saved a match point to beat top seed Alexander Zverev 4-6 7-6(6) 6-4 in 2h51m; Flavio Cobolli came from a set down to end 19-year-old Rafael Jodar's summer 4-6 7-6(3) 6-3; and Thiago Agustín Tirante beat 14th seed Jakub Menšík to reach the first Masters quarterfinal of his career. Arthur Fils needed only 82 minutes to remove world No. 5 Alex de Minaur. In the two late finishes, Brandon Nakashima outlasted Nuno Borges and Frances Tiafoe beat second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 6-4. On the women's side Marta Kostyuk recovered from a set down against Mirra Andreeva, Amanda Anisimova dismissed Wimbledon champion Linda Nosková 6-1 6-4, and Jessica Pegula survived Sorana Cîrstea 7-5 in the third. The night's biggest result came last and finished after midnight: Sara Bejlek, ranked 35th, beat world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(7) 6-4 for her first top-10 win.

Tirante was unseeded and has played four rounds to Fils's three — eleven sets this week against seven. The career split is the counterweight to his form: 211-154 on clay against 76-44 on hard. Fils's printed career figures omit almost all of 2026 and are badly understated.

Tirante: no injury concerns found. This is the first Masters 1000 quarterfinal of his career, and he has beaten Djokovic and Menšík to reach it.
⚠Fils — hip at Rome, then treatment again in July. A hip injury in practice at Rome forced a retirement on 9 May and cost him seven weeks, including Roland Garros and the grass swing — he said he was 'not even at 50 percent'. He took medical treatment again in Washington on 28 July for what was reported as a recurring back and hip problem. He has since gone 6-1, including a 82-minute win over de Minaur.
AssessmentTirante has beaten Djokovic, Landaluce and Menšík to reach a first Masters quarterfinal, and has played more tennis this week than anyone left in the draw. Fils dispatched the world No. 5 in 82 minutes and is the freshest man in the last eight — but his hip has interrupted this season twice already, and almost every match Tirante has ever won came on clay.

Four quarterfinals were scheduled and all four cleared the odds filter, so nothing was excluded. No tour-level qualifying — Cincinnati's qualifying draws finished on 12 August.
