Where the tournament stands
The third round finished last night and the seeds took a beating. Nuno Borges beat Andrey Rublev 6-3 6-4 for a second seed in two rounds; Brandon Nakashima saved three match points to beat Daniil Medvedev 6-7(3) 7-6(4) 6-1 in 2h51m, six days after losing the Montreal final; Frances Tiafoe came through a three-setter against Learner Tien ten days after hand surgery; and Jaime Faria, a qualifier, beat Adam Walton for a fifth win in seven days. Two seeds never made it onto court: Elina Svitolina withdrew with a right ankle injury she said was sustained in Toronto and aggravated by her second-round comeback, and Joao Fonseca withdrew with abdominal discomfort. Sara Bejlek beat Ekaterina Alexandrova from a set down.

For contrast, the seven matches excluded as too lopsided went to the favourite six times out of seven — the exception being Fonseca, a 1.25 favourite who withdrew with an abdominal injury.
