Daily Tennis Briefing
Thursday, August 13, 2026
A double-header of a day: Cincinnati's main draw opens with 24 first-round matches, and both Canadian Open titles are decided tonight — Świątek v Rybakina in Toronto at 6, Shelton v Nakashima in Montreal at 8. Both finals may turn on the same thing: who spent less time on court getting there.

Since yesterday's briefing
Both semifinal nights resolved and the favourites held everywhere. In Toronto, Świątek beat Svitolina 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in 2h 17m, and Rybakina came from a set down to beat Gauff 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in a match that finished close to 1 a.m. this morning — a detail that shapes tonight's final. In Montreal, Shelton beat Tien 6-2, 6-3 in 84 minutes without facing a break point, avenging two previous losses and extending a run in which he has not dropped a set all week; Nakashima edged Jodar 7-6(3), 6-4 on his fifth match point to reach the first Masters 1000 final of his career. Cincinnati qualifying wrapped up on Wednesday, so today's board is main draw only.

Neither has played this week. Timofeeva is 21 days idle, Siniakova nine — and Siniakova's last match ended in a retirement.
Health & notes
⚠Siniakova — shoulder, retired Aug 4. Retired trailing Rakhimova 6-7(1), 6-0, 5-2 in the Toronto second round with a shoulder issue. No update published since, and she skipped the rest of the swing.
Timofeeva: no injury concerns found — her 21-day gap follows a first-round exit in Prague, not a withdrawal.
The angle: Siniakova is the ranked favourite and won their surface, but she arrives on a retirement and a three-week competitive silence; Timofeeva has the better recent body of work — a WTA 125 title and a Wimbledon third round — even if none of it is fresh.

Two players with almost no recent tennis between them: one match apiece in the last 30 days, both on Aug 4 in Montreal, both defeats.
Health & notes
⚠Draper — left-arm bone bruise, unresolved. A bone bruise dating to mid-2025 forced him out of Wimbledon and has shaped his whole season. On his Aug 4 comeback in Montreal he was visibly in tears late in the third set against Atmane, with commentary attributing it to the arm. One match in six weeks; fitness genuinely uncertain.
Landaluce: no injury concerns found — but he is on a five-match losing streak stretching back to Wimbledon.
The angle: The market prices Draper at 75% on reputation and a wild card; the evidence in front of it is a player with one match in six weeks and an arm that made him cry on court ten days ago.

Near-identical rhythm: both lost in the Toronto second round on Aug 5, both have had eight days off, neither is carrying fatigue into this.
Health & notes
Kasatkina: no injury concerns found.
Sonmez: no current concerns — a May doubles withdrawal at Roland Garros had no singles follow-on.
The angle: A genuine rematch rather than a repeat: Kasatkina won the clay meeting with her defence, but Sonmez has the better hard-court season and the surface swings the rally length her way.
WTA R1Cincinnati Open · Mason, OH · Hard (outdoor)~11:00 AM ET
Vidmanova has played seven matches in 30 days to Kalinina's three — a run to the Memphis final against a player who has been managing her body since May.
Health & notes
⚠Kalinina — retired in the Rabat final, May 23. Retired at 2-6, 0-3 down to Marcinko with an injury the sources don't name, then played nothing at all for five weeks, skipping the entire grass season. She has managed only three matches since mid-July.
Vidmanova: no injury concerns found — the busiest player of the eight in this batch of first-rounders.
The angle: The wild card is the one in form: Vidmanova has won 13 of her last 20 and reached a final ten days ago, while Kalinina has barely played since a retirement in May.

The rustiest pairing on the schedule — 22 days idle for Waltert, 27 for Marcinko, the longest layoff of any player in today's Cincinnati draw.
Health & notes
⚠Marcinko — retired in the Eastbourne semifinal, June 26. Retired trailing Keys 1-6 with an injury the sources don't specify. She has played only sparingly since and nothing at all since July 17.
Waltert: no injury concerns found — her gap follows a first-round loss in Hamburg.
The angle: Marcinko is the better player on paper and won their most recent meeting, but Waltert has taken three of four overall and both women arrive cold enough that the head-to-head may matter more than the form.

Rakhimova is the only one of the two to have played this week — and it was a 68-minute loss to Pegula, so the week cost her nothing physically.
Health & notes
Rakhimova: no injury concerns found.
Birrell: no injury concerns found, but she is on a three-match losing streak.
The angle: A 2-2 head-to-head between two players ranked 14 apart, with three of the four meetings going the distance — the coin-flip pricing is honest.

The sharpest court-time gap of the morning: Townsend played a 3h 24m three-setter against Bencic five days ago; Osorio has been off since Aug 4.
Health & notes
Townsend: no injury concerns found — but that Bencic match was the longest single match played by anyone in today's Cincinnati field.
Osorio: no injury concerns found.
The angle: Townsend is the market favourite despite being ranked 50 places lower, on the strength of a Toronto run — but 204 minutes on court last Saturday is a real tax against an opponent who has been resting.

Opposite ends of the spectrum: Norrie has played eight matches in 30 days and 4h 35m this week alone; Prizmic hasn't hit a competitive ball in 29 days.
Health & notes
⚠Prizmic — retired at Umag, July 15, and hasn't played since. Retired trailing 0-4 in the third against Molcan with no reason published. He has a documented recurrent arm problem — he also retired against Fils at Indian Wells in March with arm pain — and 29 days of silence since.
Norrie: retired at Roland Garros in May, but has since played eight matches in a month including a win over De Minaur, so no current concern.
The angle: Norrie's Montreal run — including a 2h 52m win over De Minaur — is the best tennis he has played all year, and Prizmic is walking in cold off a month-long injury absence.

Linette: no injury concerns found.
The angle: Two players in near-identical shape with no history between them; the market's 20-point spread rests on Ruse's better summer, not on anything the two have proved against each other.

Krueger's three-month record is the best in today's entire Cincinnati field — 20-4 — but she hasn't played in 14 days, and the reason is the flag below.
Health & notes
⚠Krueger — retired vs Osaka, July 30, 14 days ago. Retired at 3-6, 1-3 in Washington. She then skipped Toronto entirely and has an open injury entry with no resolution date. The single biggest unknown in this batch.
Boisson: a run of injuries and medical issues kept her out from September 2025 to March 2026; her ranking has since collapsed from the top 100 to 299.
The angle: On form this is a mismatch — 20-4 against 2-5 — but Krueger's last act was retiring mid-match a fortnight ago, and nobody has published what was wrong.

Both last played on Aug 4 in Montreal. Shapovalov's six matches in 30 days include a run to the Los Cabos final; Mannarino has managed three.
Health & notes
⚠Shapovalov — retired in Montreal, Aug 4. Retired at 0-3 in the third against Svajda after appearing to hurt himself serving, taking a 10-minute off-court medical timeout and moving poorly afterwards. He said the day before that he had been managing a rib fracture and a shoulder injury all season. No fitness update published since.
Mannarino: no injury concerns found — but he is 3-9 on hard courts in 2026.
The angle: Shapovalov reached a final ten days ago and owns the head-to-head, but he retired hurt in his last match and Mannarino, for all his poor season, has beaten him here before.

Burruchaga: no injury concerns found — 2-5 on hard courts in 2026.
Struff: no injury concerns found. At 36 he reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon last month.

Yastremska has played no matches at all in the last 30 days — a 43-day layoff, the longest of anyone on today's schedule. Maria, at 39, has played four.
Health & notes
Maria: no injury concerns found — she won the Newport Beach 125 title on July 12 without dropping a set.
⚠Yastremska — 43 days without a match. No dated injury item or withdrawal notice was found, but she skipped the entire North American hard-court swing. Preview coverage today describes her fitness as an issue all season. She is not on the Cincinnati withdrawal list.
The angle: The bookmakers have this as a coin-flip on ranking, but Maria has won both meetings 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-4 and has played eighteen winning matches in three months while Yastremska has played none since Wimbledon.

Atmane played twice this week in Montreal — including a win over Khachanov — while Fucsovics has one match in 30 days. Fucsovics's mid-June to early-July results could not be reliably sourced, so his 3-month record is marked ≈.
Health & notes
Fucsovics: no injury concerns found, though his recent record is only partly sourced.
Atmane: no injury concerns found — a four-week gap in July had no reported cause.
The angle: Atmane beat Draper and Khachanov in Montreal inside the last ten days; Fucsovics has won 9 matches all season and played once in a month.

The most evenly matched workload on the card: both played once in the window, both on Aug 6, 79 minutes against 74. Navone's 30-day total is the heavier — seven matches and 786 minutes since mid-July.
Health & notes
Navone: no injury concerns found — but he has been on court over 13 hours since July 15.
Collignon: no injury concerns found; he reached the Gstaad final in July.
The angle: Collignon is the higher-ranked man and beat Shelton at Roland Garros this year, but he has lost three straight and Navone beat Berrettini and Vacherot in Montreal.

This is the number that decides the final. Świątek has spent 6h 36m on court this week across ten sets; Rybakina has played eleven sets and four three-setters, and by her own account around 11½ hours — her semifinal against Gauff finished close to 1 a.m. this morning. Her total is shown in sets because the Gauff match duration was never published.
Health & notes
Świątek: no injury concerns found. Her semifinal was 2h 17m and finished in the early evening.
⚠Rybakina — recovery, not injury. Four three-setters in five matches, roughly 11½ hours on court, and a semifinal that ended around 1 a.m. on the morning of the final. No injury reported, but she has had well under 24 hours to turn around.
The angle: Twelve meetings and dead level at 6-6, but this final may be settled off the court: Rybakina has played eleven sets and four three-setters to reach it, finishing at 1 a.m. today, while Świątek has come through in ten sets and 6h 36m with an evening semifinal behind her. Rybakina has the better season — 39-11, two titles including Melbourne — and would be the first woman to reach the round of 16 at all seven WTA 1000s this year; Świątek is chasing a first Canadian Open final win and a 12th WTA 1000 title, and is 11-2 in WTA 1000 finals.

Monfils has played three matches since May and one this week; Hijikata has more tennis in his legs over three months but has lost four straight.
Health & notes
Hijikata: no injury concerns found; a four-week gap in July had no reported cause.
Monfils: no injury concerns found. He has announced he will retire at the end of the 2026 season and is on a reduced farewell schedule, with a US Open wild card to come.
The angle: At 39 and ranked 347, Monfils is the betting favourite on name and a Montreal win over Majchrzak — against a 25-year-old who has lost four in a row but has played ten times the tennis this summer.

Neither has played this week. Volynets has the better three-month record by a distance — 14-7 against 4-6.
Health & notes
Boulter: no injury concerns found, but she is on a five-match losing streak and her ten-day gap has no stated cause.
Volynets: retired at Nottingham in June, but returned six days later and has since reached a final and a quarterfinal — not an active concern.
The angle: The odds call it even and the ranking favours Boulter, but she has lost five in a row while Volynets has won 14 of 21 since May — the only thing pointing Boulter's way is that 82-minute win in Ostrava.

Both played four matches this week, but Nakashima has spent 8h 44m on court to Shelton's 5h 28m — a 196-minute difference, most of it in a 151-minute win over Droguet and a 174-minute win over Rinderknech. Shelton has not dropped a set all tournament.
Health & notes
⚠Shelton — left hand, cut in the semifinal. Collided with the back wall against Tien on Aug 12, opening a wound on his left hand that needed an extended medical timeout to stop the bleeding. He finished the match comfortably and it is reported as minor — but it is his hitting hand, and bruising is the stated concern for tonight.
Nakashima: no injury concerns found — but 8h 44m across four matches this week is the heaviest load of anyone playing today.
The angle: Shelton is the defending champion, has not dropped a set all week, and has never lost to Nakashima in five attempts — but every one of those five matches contained a tiebreak, and Nakashima arrives in the best form of his career, 8-1 this month with five top-20 wins in 2026. The counterweight is court time: Nakashima has played three and a quarter hours more tennis than Shelton this week to get here, and this is his first Masters 1000 final against a man playing his second in a row at the same event.

Svajda has played five matches in 30 days to Bellucci's one — and Bellucci's single match was a straight-sets loss on his return from a five-week absence.
Health & notes
⚠Bellucci — knee, missed five weeks. Withdrew from Wimbledon roughly 48 hours before this exact first-round match after a knee injury in practice, and did not play again until Montreal on Aug 4, where he lost in straight sets. One match in ten weeks.
Svajda: no injury concerns found. Two of his recent wins came via opponent retirements — Hewitt in July and Shapovalov on Aug 4.
The angle: The match Wimbledon never got: Bellucci pulled out of this same pairing in June with a knee problem, and returns having played once in ten weeks against a man who reached the Roland Garros fourth round and the Wimbledon third.

McNally played twice this week — five sets across wins over Noskova and a three-set loss to Eala — while Kessler has been off since Aug 4. Neither match had a published duration, so McNally's court time is shown in sets.
Health & notes
McNally: a severe elbow injury cost her the back half of 2024 and required a second surgery, but 2026 has been healthy. Cincinnati is her home event — she grew up 20 minutes away.
Kessler: no injury concerns found.
The angle: An all-American night match between two players in identical form, with the local favourite priced up despite the lower ranking and despite losing this exact match-up at this exact tournament last year.
Qualifying
No tour-level qualifying matches today. Cincinnati's ATP and WTA qualifying draws were completed on Wednesday, August 12, and the main draws begin this morning. The Canadian Open in Toronto and Montreal is down to its two finals. The qualifying board returns when the next event opens its draw.
